Pinkvilla Exclusive: Anushka Sharma talks about 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' and working with SRK & Katrina

Anushka Sharma debuted alongside Shahrukh Khan in ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ in 2008. But it was her rendition of Shruthi in 'Band Baaja Baaraat' that made people take notice of her. She now re-unites with Shah Rukh in one of this year’s most anticipated movies - 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'. This Yash Chopra directorial also stars Katrina Kaif with AR Rahman providing the musical score.

In an exclusive interview to Pinkvilla.com, Anushka spills the beans on the movie and her working relationship with Katrina Kaif & Shahrukh Khan. This extremely endearing actress also talks to us on why Twitter and social media is not her cup of tea. Read on ....

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is one of the most anticipated movies this year. Tell us something about the movie and the character you portray.

It’s a Yash Chopra film. So one can expect beautiful scenes, romantic songs and a lot more. I play a girl by the name Akira. She is a 21 year old who wants to work for Discovery Channel and make documentaries. She is extremely ambitious and would do anything to make it big and realize her dreams.

How was it working with Shahrukh Khan after a span of 4 years?

My career started with Shahrukh and so he is extremely special and will always be my favorite co-star. I just didn’t think that I will work with Shahrukh again but I am glad it did happen. He is a gentleman to work with; Very warm and extremely accommodating. He is also extremely helpful. When I say helpful, what I mean is, it is very easy for Shahrukh to intimidate anybody. But he doesn’t do that. He has a very human element to him and that’s what makes him so special. He is a great positive energy to have around. He also has no airs about being Shahrukh Khan. It’s nice to see that and he has not changed at all from his RNBDJ days. We shot at beautiful places, we hung out, played scrabble and had a great time

May we know who won in the scrabble games?

Not me. I was just the score keeper :)

This is your first movie with Katrina Kaif. How was it working with her?

We did not know each other well before the filming of the movie. Katrina is someone who is very easy to talk to and does not behave like a star. We spoke a lot while on the sets on a myriad of topics like our families and also unimportant things and we got along really well. She is a very hard working and ambitious girl and she is quite funny too. I am not a girlie girl and don’t enjoy talking about boys, clothes, bags etc. And, she I felt, is the same way. I guess that is one of the reasons we hit it off really well.

All Yash Chopra’s heroines have donned the white sari. Who is wearing it this time around?

I am not; my character does not demand it. Quite frankly I don’t know who is wearing it.:)

There was this report about Katrina Kaif calling you at 3 am in the morning to sort out some differences on the movie promotions. Any truth to it?

There is absolutely no truth to it. Quite frankly, I haven’t even discussed promotions with my producer. The talks for the movie promotions haven’t yet begun, so such an incident is highly unlikely.

With AR Rahman providing music to this movie, the expectations are quite high. What can you tell us about the music of the movie?

It’s quite an honor that I am in a film where AR Rahman is providing the music. I think people will really like this album. All the songs are great and Gulzar has provided really good lyrics for all the songs.

Could you shed some light on your upcoming movies after Jab Tak Hai Jaan?

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola - we are done shooting and it’s going to release in January. I am going to be shooting for Peekay and Bombay Velvet after that. I am in a happy space right now. I am working with such esteemed directors who are very different from one another and it’s great that they envisioned me playing the protagonist of their movie.

You have worked with Shahrukh; you will be working with Aamir. Any chances of you working with Salman? There were reports of you doing Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick.

No, I will be busy with the projects I mentioned. So, not as of now.

Do you plan your career carefully?

By planning, if you mean that I am choosing my work carefully? Yes I do. After Rab Ne, I got many offers. But I did not take them up as I was not convinced. I do not just take up any movie that comes my way. I want roles that will challenge me as an actor and also give me satisfaction. I do movies which I would love to watch. I always go with my instinct. I am glad that my decision of being patient and not jumping into things just for the sake of having work has really worked out. So yes, I will say my career is carefully planned.

What is your take on the number game?

I hear a lot of talk on it. But I don’t think one can plan your career trying to be number one. I just want to do good work. If being number one means you are working with the best directors and on the best projects in the industry, then yes, I would like to be number one.

There’s so much being written about you and Ranveer Singh. Do the linkup rumors affect you now?

In the beginning of your career these rumors affect you, or rather bother you. But soon you start getting used to it. These linkups are an occupational hazard. For me, it’s important that people appreciate the work that I am doing. That is on the forefront. Other things I just block them off.

You have a Twitter account but you not very active. Do you plan to come back to Twitter?

I tried to do the Twitter thing. But it really did not work out. My thoughts and feelings are very personal and it’s difficult for me to put it out there. So Twitter is not my thing. I feel, I can’t really be talking so much about me.

But do you come online or keep tabs on your fan clubs?

Yes, I do, as and when I can. It’s interesting to see the updates and photos. They post my pictures that I myself have never seen. It’s very nice to see people showing all this love and affection.

What does Anushka do in her spare time? How do you unwind?

These days, I am quite badly addicted to Grey’s Anatomy. I am done with Curb your enthusiasm and now I am onto Grey’s anatomy. That is how I unwind. After this, I plan to watch Game of Thrones. Apart from that, I read a lot and I spend time with my friends and family.
