'Barfi!' is India's official entry for the Oscars

The magic of Anurag Basu's "Barfi!" has worked. The heartwarming movie, about love between a deaf and mute boy and an autistic girl, has been chosen as India's official entry for the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The decision was taken at a Film Federation of India (FFI) meeting in Hyderabad Saturday night.

"'Barfi!' has indeed been chosen as the country's official entry this year," FFI secretary general Suparn Sen told IANS.

The movie, starring Ranbir Kapoor as Murphy aka Barfi, and Priyanka Chopra as Jhilmil, has been lauded in film circles for its simplistic and moving narrative that has managed to tug at the heartstrings of audiences which equally enjoy commercial potboilers.

The makers are joyous about the news.

"We are honoured that 'Barfi!' has been selected to represent India as its official entry to the Academy Awards 2013. 'Barfi!' is very close to the hearts of all of us at UTV, and it gives us great satisfaction that a film we have developed and nurtured from its inception has met with so much love from audiences and critics worldwide," Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director - Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.

"An added source of pride is that this is the fourth UTV film in the last seven years to have been selected to represent India at the Academy awards; our earlier selections being 'Rang De Basanti' (2006), 'Harishchandrachi Factory' (2009) and 'Peepli Live' (2010)," he added.

"Barfi!" released Sep 14, and is still drawing full houses in theatres.

10000000000000% agreed...look at these cheap non talent morons of bollywood how they are trying to ruin 'BARFI' s image.....BARFI is all time winner!!!!!!!!!!oscar is nothing for this movie....huh!!

Anonymous's picture

Actually copied movie will not get Oscar Awards they should send Paan Singh Tomar and Thanks Tanqeed.com for exposing all the Copied/Inspired scenes Tanqeed was the first site to expose Pilgarism.

Anonymous's picture

It is going to be SO HUMILIATING FOR INDIA..!! LMAO.. because the whole movie is lifted from so many hollywood movies.. they will be like.. "shame shame on india"

Diya4's picture

@pizzapasta....i meant to say that the scenes copied from charlie chaplin were very evident even from the trailers and even children could identify with it and some people here in india and even in PV haven't even heard of The notebook before and i'm saying it because recently in a PV post the copied scenes were posted and everyone was like "I loved the movie but didn't knew that some of the best scenes are copied" and i personally liked The notebook much more than i liked barfi!

Pinkvilla_boy's picture

The best thing of Barfi is Ranbir kapoor. Don't know abt Oscar, wish a National Award for him.
=========================================
i AGREE as for the Oscars i don t see much chances because there are scenes in it copied straight from Amelie and The Note Book both are well known films :S

Anonymous's picture

Kahaani should be nominated, burfi is just a film that has strong film characters but not a good story. Anurag basu should learn from sujoy ghosh and milan luthria how to make a movie

I found Barfi really boring the performances of all three - Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana was fantastic but I didnt find the film gripping enough forcing me to stay glued to my seat. I yawned throughout the film because of the lack of dialogue it just didn't work for me. There is alot of hype around this film and I'm shocked how its made 60 crores already, good for the Barfi team but it's not a film I can watch again and personally I don't think it should go to the Oscars, alot of the scenes were copied and lacked originality. I would've preferred a Heroine or Vicky Donor to gain an entry in the Oscars - VD because of its original concept and ability to entertain the masses without any big stars and Heroine for its glam quotient , gripping storyline and power packed performance by Kareena.

Anonymous's picture

EVEN IF IT'S COPIED, IT HAS MADE IT 2 OSCAR. WHAT ABOUT HEROINE. POOR MOVIE

Anonymous's picture

ROFL.....That blows our chance....not that we had any ! And hello ! PC acted like a retard not as a Autist girl. Many here dont even know the frigging difference...Her acting was an insult to Autism. Wish her so called research had
revealed as much to her. It was a crappy movie with PC going OTT and Ranbir...well....he sucked.

Oxygen's picture

I haven't seen the film. But really happy for the team. This may boost its BO performance even more.Though due to plagiarism chances of making it to the top, seem really bleak. The Charlie Chaplin scenes will not be considered as plagiarised, atleast legally.Because, its not under copyright now.Its been over 100 yrs,so people can use it.Like for example, anyone can remake Emma,PnP or other Jane austen novels without any issues as its not under copyright. But what about 'The Notebook'scenes?,they surely are gonna notice it.Firstly,I dislike The Notebook, its just too sappy and pretentious after a point of time. And seriously don't understand why did Anurag copy scenes from that film.I mean,he couldn't think of any other idea to execute the mother-daughter scene(that ppl are talking about)? But he has completely lifted the scene.Or atleast he should have thanked the makers of the film or get the rights for the scenes(though I doubt, ppl get copyrights for scenes..lol).And I heard there were other plagiarized scenes too.But I am happy the film has been appreciated for the superb performances from Ranbir,Pc and Ileana..Like @pizaapasta says even though chances are less,Lets hope it gets through.

Congrats to Ranbir Kapoor & Anurag basu
P.S. i just hope the jury at Oscars can't catch the scenes that were inspired by some Hollywood movies

you gay kareena lover. what about pc? she deserves a congrats too!!

pinkvilla post!

Hey, Watch your mouth. It's people like you who bully others and make them commit Sucide. Do you like pc so much? then you say congrats to her.

The Notebook is a VERY well-known film, its arguably this generations 'Casablanca', not in terms of substance obviously but in terms of popularity. I hate sappy romantic movies but even I can quote "I'm a bird!!". Its also widely referenced in tv shows and movies, anyone who knows popculture knows The Notebook.

Anonymous's picture

This movie copied scenes from other movies, I am glad a hindi movie is in the oscar nominations. But seriously, the exact scenes were copied and even dialogues. Nothing is original anymore.

Anonymous's picture

Then no award for india in academy

Anonymous's picture

Not only were a lot of the scenes copied from other Hollywood movies but PC overacted in the film. She wasn't playing an autistic girl but a MENTAL girl. There's a huge different. Autistic people are not completely mental and they definitely do not act like that. I hate how Bollywood goes overboard with autisticism.

barbie girl's picture

Yay for team BARFI!

Anonymous's picture

This is a great movie but the fact that 2 key scenes were copied from a super popular movie like 'The Notebook' will not escape the academy's notice. Plagiarism is not tolerated in the United States like it is in India so chances of this movie bringing home the Academy award are pretty slim.

Anonymous's picture

they shoulda send kahani or paan singh tomar. barfi might be a nice movie but theres nothing original abt it. it wont be nominated, mark my words

PizzaPasta's picture

@Diya4 what do you mean by saying that The Notebook is not well known? Maybe not on a Bollywood site like PV but it's one of the most popular romantic films(& book) of the past decade & one of the biggest cult films to come out of Hollywood in recent times! Like heck the Academy won't identify the copied scenes(esp.the mother-daughter scene),especially considering that the Academy also includes younger stars like.......ummmm Ryan Gosling-the star of the film????? In fact I believe those scenes from The Notebook,Singin In The Rain are easier to identify than the Chaplin and Buster Keaton films are almost 100years old,& classics though they are the Academy won't consider films that old as a reference point for a Hindi film made in 2012.

PizzaPasta's picture

WOW damn happy for #Team Barfi especially Ranbir,Priyanka,Ileana & of course the man who made it possible-Anurag Basu. Barfi is a film with a universal theme & has all the ingredients the Academy wants:nostalgia, heartwarming, something unique(like less dialogues & physical comedy),& deals with disabled people. So yeah it is the right choice though probably more original films like PST & GOW could have been considered . But Barfi still has a shot at getting a nomination though the copied sequences might turn off the Academy, still hoping they pass the litmus test. Oh & BTW now all they need is aggressive Oscar campaigning, unless you promote your film well there's no chance of getting a nomination inspired or not.

Anonymous's picture

PRIYANKA GETS REALLY COMFORTABLE WITH RANBIR IN BARFI. HMMM, I WONDER IF SHE IS SO COMFORTABLE WITH SHAH RUKH. I DON'T WANT RANBIR TO WORK WITH PRIYANKA EVER AGAIN. SHE IS BENEFITING FROM EVERYBODY IN THE INDUSTRY.

Anonymous's picture

I JUST SAW AN INTERVIEW WITH ANURANG BASU. HE TWISITED THE TRUTH AND SAID BARFI IS A TRIBUTE TO CHARLIE CHALPLIN. WHAT A CROOK. BARFI IS NO TRIBUTE TO CHAPLIN, ANURANG COMPLETELY STOLE SCENES FROM MANY OTHER FILMS NOT JUST THE FILM WITH CHARLIE CHAPLIN. I JUST HOPE HOLLYWOOD CAN SEE FARTHER THAN THAT. I NEVER LIKE ANURANG BASU AND MADHUR BHANDAKAR. THEY BOTH REMINDS ME OF GULSHAN GROVER. ALL ARE CROOKS.

Anonymous's picture

ranbir kapoor acted s*** in this movie. he is beinng promoted only because of his family background.

Anonymous's picture

Congrats to Ranbir Kapoor & Anurag basu
P.S. i just hope the jury at Oscars can't catch the scenes that were inspired by some Hollywood movies

you gay kareena lover. what about pc? she deserves a congrats too!!

pinkvilla post!

Anonymous's picture

with all due respect for the makers, i did not find this movie appealing or
convincing in any way...it was tough on may part to watch the entire movie...
ranbir acted well and so did the other girl ileana...but priyanka, she over acted
a lot, she was trying too hard, she acted as if autistic children were abnormal,
they are not abnormal, they suffer from a communication disorder..they live their
lives pretty normal..all and all not
an impressive movie.!

Anonymous's picture

And you call Barfi a movie to be oscar nominated?

Did anybody here watched last year's best foreign film "A Separation"? That is what you call ORIGINAL, WARM, and focuses on REALITY. Such a great movie. Iran should be proud to have that entry. and we should be ashamed of sending few scenes and songs and then calling them movie. Bollywood will go nowhere until the formula of songs and dances is totally broken from movies.

Every single movie in Bollywood is musical. Thats the only genre we have. Shame. Big shame

Anonymous's picture

Oh No ! This movie was soooo boring and so many scenes were copied !! They could have sent Paan Singh Tomar or Kahani instead :(

Kitty's picture

Fantastic news, couldn't be happier for the Barfi! team. :)

Anonymous's picture

lol bad idea, what if the makers of notebook slap Barfi with plagiarism charges? if they think the jury wont see through all the copied scenes ..they are idiots!

Anonymous's picture

Barfi was a sweet and nice film..and Ranbir Kapoor performs well. But it did copy scenes form Notebook, Charlie Chaplin and Others. And the Hollywood Academy will definitely seen that...!

Anonymous's picture

PRIYANKA WAS SO CUTEEEEEEEEE AND HEART TOUCHGING IN THIS MOVIE.I RELATED TO HER MORE THAN RANBIR.OVERALL,ONE OF THE BESTEST MOVIE....GLAD I SAW IT!AN AWARD-WINNING MOVIE....WELL,I DON'T EVEN CARE FOR OSCARS...I DON'T KNOW WHY POOR INDIANS ARE SO CRAZYYYYY FOR THIS.I WANT BARFI TEAM TO SWEEP ALL INDIAN AWARDS ,INC NATIONAL AWARDS......THOSE DUFFER SENIOR ACTORS AND ACTRESSES AND DIRECTORS SHOULD LEARN FROM ANURAG,RANBIR AND PC.....

Diya4's picture

I think they will remove all the copied scenes and then send it cause the scenes copied from charlie chaplin movies are very evident and everyone knows about them but everyone does not know about notebook but they should remove those scenes too before sending

BlueHenna's picture

Sweet; only comment, please brush up the subtitles in the song and if possible music as the story moves along, it's such an important part of the movie. Someone with a disability such as deafness, will be missing so much of the story as well as people who do not understand Hindi.

tea float's picture

I wonder who are these selectors? With little knowledge of cinema they could've spotted the copy-paste jobs & spared us the embarrassment! I mean I absolutely loved Barfi! But I'm all for original cinematic brilliance. Anurag Basu is such gifted, WHY?? I mean why he had to resort to plagiarism? :-(

Now India will need a nose-job too!

spicylia's picture

BARFI truly deserves it.....RANBIR, PC, ILEANA congrats for such a great piece of work

Anonymous's picture

A lot of scenes in Barfi were inspired from other films. Forget winning the oscar, I don't think so it will even make to the nominations.
How can the Film Federation of India forget "Kahaani" & "Paan Singh Tomar". They were authentic stories & had brilliant performances from Vidya Balan & Irfan Khan.
Sach kahu toh Barfi ko oscar mein bhej kar India ki aur bhi beizzati hogi, because the jury will find out the plagiarism. and thus again they will say Indians always make films copying Hollywood! Duh!

Anonymous's picture

Now the makers have opened themselves up to copyright infringement law suits.

All they need is any one involved in the making of The Notebook to be at any of the Oscar nom screenings and decide they have some time on their hands to go to court and they will be sued their asses of.

Basu made a good film, but he directly copied 2 scenes from The Notebook that are DIALOGUE TO DIALOGUE, SCENERY TO SCENERY (the scene where the mum is advising her daughter in the car watching her ex boyfriend who is cutting wood is exactly like The Notebook)

Theres no use denying it. Making a good movie does not negate the copying.

They've just opened themselves up to a world of court room pain.

Anonymous's picture

Gawd, I am now bored of Barfi. Frigg

Anonymous's picture

now they will make more fun of us...

Anonymous's picture

how about instead of trashing the film, and criticizing and being negative, let's all support and be proud that India is being recognized in the Western side, and if this film does make it as far as other films like Lagaan, it will show how much India has evolved in their story lines and screenplay.

Stop the hate!

Anonymous's picture

A lot of this movie was copied lol, from the Notebook , Amelie, and a slew of Chaplin movies. It will not even make the final cut at the oscars for sure lol.

Anonymous's picture

pathetic
indians cant nominate an ORIGINAL film for oscars?
this will be laughing stock at the academy
and btw for the people getting over-excited: this is just indians nomination to the academy to consider. it does not mean that the movie is one of the finalists to get an oscar. far from that.

Anonymous's picture

congrats to barfi team barfi was outstanding.ranbir deserve every sucess but it wont make it to final nomination.

Anonymous's picture

I actually agree with Pinkvilla Boy! Barfi was a nice film, but did COPY scenes from The Notebook, which was quite noticeable, and that is why it will not receive a nomination at the Oscars. I think it may even make Bollywood seem like a copycat in the eyes of the Hollywood academy.

Anonymous's picture

Totally deserving.

PC and Ranbir are the BEST. Period.

Voiceswriter's picture

Wow! Congrats to all involved, especially PC who is hitting the stratosphere right now.

kohinoor's picture

I dont think it will make it
But all the best

Anonymous's picture

a couple of inspired scenes can't take away from a beautiful film! All the best

Anonymous's picture

I believe tht KAHAANI was b better choice for Oscars, not barfi..
