Close on the heels of her prestigious Padma Shri honour, Sridevi won another award at the NDTV Indian Of The Year ceremony at New Delhi. The superstar was honoured with 'Entertainer of the Year' award for her historic comeback with English Vinglish in 2012. NDTV lauded the actress for proving that 'talent can only get better with age' and again making it possible for 'actresses of substance to take center-stage in Bollywood.' The award was presented to Sridevi by BJP leader Sushma Swaraj who revealed that she loved watching Sridevi's films.
Fresh from the global triumph of her film English Vinglish, when Sridevi’s name was recently announced for the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honour, the legendary actress joined an elite group of Bollywood divas honoured in the past. These actresses have not only ruled the marquee with their brand of magic but have also been the most beloved, most powerful and most celebrated women of their times and even today. Filmfare may be the oldest and most coveted award on the block but that does not make it free from an occasional myopia. Over the years a host of performances by legendary actors that have attained a cult status have gone surprisingly unrewarded. Recently there was quite a hue and cry within the industry and in the media when Sridevi's brilliant performance in her comeback hit English Vinglish met with the similar fate. The credibility of these awards have been constantly questioned with some of our hugest stars like Aamir, Salman, Akshay and Ajay boycotting them altogether.
In 2012, the legendary Sridevi and French heart-throb Mehdi Nebbou gave chemistry a whole new definition in the actresses's landmark comeback film 'English Vinglish.' They spoke different languages but read each other's eyes so beautifully that Sri and Mehdi have gone down Bollywood history as one of the most iconic desi-videshi pairings on Indian celluloid. But they are not alone. Hindi Cinema has seen several such international collaborations in the past creating magic on the screen, Scroll through these boys and girls and tell us which desi-videshi jodi sets your heart aflutter.
