Box Office Report: Udta Punjab Records 5th Highest Opening Weekend of 2016
Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab has had an impressive first weekend as the film's collections escalated on Saturday and Sunday. The Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh starrer earned INR 11.25 crores and INR 12.50 crores on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
The three day total of the movie stands at INR 33.80 crores and the movie has recorded the fifth highest opening weekend of 2016, after Housefull 3 (INR 53.31 crores), Fan (INR 52.35 crores), Airlift (INR 44.30 crores) and Baaghi (INR 38.58 crores).
Udta Punjab has done really well at the box office, especially East Punjab that has earned a record weekend business for the year so far. Delhi / UP was also very good while other circuits ranged from good to decent. Mumbai and Mysore showed the best growth over the weekend as this sort of content normally does better in Mumbai city and Bangalore.
It we take the genre of the film then the weekend is very good as these sort of film don't get over 30 crore nett in the first weekend though on the other side it did have a good cast which meant a wider audience than most dark thrillers.
If the movie can pull through on Monday, then it will see good business for the next two weeks as no major movie releases till Sultan makes it ways to the theatres. However, Udta Punjab will face great competition from Diljit Dosanjh's Return of Sardaaji, especially in East Punjab, as the movie releases next week.
