Box-Office Day One: Roohi flirts with the Rs 3 crore mark on its opening day, springs a pleasant surprise
And the audiences are back in the cinema halls as 2.30 lakh people watch the Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma led horror comedy in cinema halls on day one.
In an earlier report, we reported that the horror comedy, Roohi, has recorded a decent opening in the range of Rs 2.25 to 2.50 crore based on limited sample available till the 7 pm show. And now, we bring an exclusive update on the day one figures of the Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao and Varun Sharma film. The data from national multiplex chains and single screens suggest that the film has comfortably crossed the Rs 2.50 crore mark and is rather flirting with Rs 3.00 crore at the box-office.
The three leading chains – PVR, INOX and Cinepolis have contributed Rs 1.90 crore, and given the general trend, this suggests all India day one in the vicinity of Rs 3.00 crore. It can be marginally higher or lower depending on how well the single screens have performed, but one can assume an opening in the range of Rs 2.80 to 3.20 crore in India. PVR closed its day with a collection of Rs 93 lakh, whereas INOX and Cinepolis contributed Rs 60 lakh and Rs 35 lakh respectively.
The approximate footfalls of the film on opening day is expected to be in the range of 2.30 to 2.40 lakh. This is a positive sign for the industry has the audience has stepped out to watch the film on its opening day and the key faring markets were Delhi, Lucknow, Allahbad, Kanpur, Chandigarh, Bangalore, with Mumbai being just about decent. The surge in Covid cases in Maharashtra and the lockdown imposed in some places has played a spoilt sport and had the scenario been similar to what it was in January/February in terms of case count, a Rs 3.5 crore plus opening was on card this film. This is a positive news for the Hindi film trade and the day one figures of Roohi should motivate a lot of other producers to take the welcome step of releasing their film in the cinema halls.
The word of mouth will come at play from Friday, and the trend from hereon will be on the merit of content, but the opening does suggest that the audience is hungry for big screen entertainment, and it’s time to get the film cycle rolling again. In an ideal non-covid world, the day one of Roohi would have easily been upward of Rs 6 crore, as the music has worked and even the trailer had created a certain level of curiosity. The opening day is done and now, the trend from tomorrow through the weekend will be dependent on audience word of mouth. Rs 10 crore plus weekend would be a reasonable result for the film given the opposition and challenges.
To note, these are just estimates collected from data sample available to us and stay tuned for a detailed comparative day one report tomorrow. We shall update this page with exact figures tomorrow morning.
