Shortfilms maker and actor, Pradeep Ranganathan's second venture as a hero, "Dragon," has made its impact at the box office. The film was released last Friday, February 21, 2025. Not only has it garnered impressive reviews, but also it clocked an impressive worldwide gross of ₹50 crores over its opening weekend. Of this, ₹25 crore was collected from Tamilnadu alone. This success places "Dragon" to potentially become the actor's second ₹100 crore blockbuster, following his debut blockbuster, "Love Today" which was remade as "Loveyapa" in Hindi recently.
Dragon is a romantic comedy that delves into the life of Raghavan, portrayed by Pradeep Ranganathan himself and directed by Ashwath Marimuthu of fantasy rom-com "Oh My Kadavule" fame. Exploring the leading man's journey from being a college 'don' to facing the challenges of early adulthood, Dragon touched upon lots of Gen Z nuances. Marimuthu's direction is lauded for its clever writing and engaging storytelling as he seamlessly blended humour, romance and life lessons. The film offers a realistic portrayal of college life and towards the last hour, Dragon hooks everyone emotionally to the screens.
The ensemble cast, especially the two leading ladies, delivered praiseworthy performances, thereby enhancing the film's appeal. Malayali starlet Anupama Parameswaran, known for her charming screen presence, brings depth to her role, complementing Pradeep's portrayal of Raghavan. On the other hand, Dragon faced huge competition on Day 1 as Superstar Dhanush's directorial venture Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam (NEEK) has hit the marquee same day. However, the Pradeep Ranganathan starrer secured a strong opening, grossing ₹5.75 crore on its first day in Tamil Nadu, which was triple the earnings of "NEEK" on the same day. On Second day, Dragon grossed ₹8.85 crore and ₹10.35 crore on the third day in Tamil Nadu, bringing the state's total to ₹25+ crores for the opening weekend.
