Directed by Abhishek Chaubey and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Sonchiriya is shot in the valleys of Madhya Pradesh and is set in the year 1975. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput, Manoj Bajpayee, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana and Ranvir Shorey in the lead roles. The movie is being appreciated by the critics for the content and the powerful actors displayed by the lead actors. It’s a brilliant script backed by a director like Abhishek and an ensemble cast.  The movie is of a completely different genre. But, the movie has not been able to draw the audiences to the theatres.

According to a report in Box Office India, the movie has earned around Rs 1 crore at the box office. When we contacted Trade Analyst Girish Johar to know about the big prediction of day 1, he told us, “Having a battery of well-established actors like Sushant, bhumi, Ashutosh and Manoj, the film should do well. The trailer was quite exciting, it is a dacoit action film with a rustic feel to it, and the trailer was enjoyed immensely. Treatment of the film has given a restricted appeal, based on a niche set of audiences, and the film will have to rest on word of mouth. I am pegging the film to have a start of 1.5 crores and if it does good, then it can be 2-3 crores.”

The movie will face competition from the Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon starrer Luka Chuppi. Sonchiriya got a limited release in less than 1,000 screens. Talking about shooting in Chambal, Sushant told us, “When I used to think about films that were based in Chambal, about period films about Baaghis, I used to think in a certain way. When I read the script, I thought it was not that. While the film was true to 1970s it was not exactly what I thought about it would be."
