Shahid Kapoor – Alia Bhatt’s latest film Udta Punjab is in news due to the several cuts demanded by the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification). The board consists of twenty five un-official members and a chairperson, a post which is currently being led by Pahlaj Nihalani.  But this isn’t the first time the Censor board has grabbed headlines. It has been in the news right since the pre-independence era for their strict verdicts and interferences into the creative liberty of a respective film. Many chairpersons have been backlashed for their unjustified behavior and strict actions against certain films. But this time it’s different as the country is socially connected and has complete access to the other parts of the world. Due to which it is indigestible for people to accept these decisions from the board which follows all those rules which were formed decades back. Every time Pahlaj Nihalani comes up with unconvincing reasons, he has received immense backlash over the social media. His reactions over the latest franchise of James Bond fetched him the tag of ‘Sanskari Censor Board Chief’. His sharp eyes neither spared the documentary films nor a children’s film like ‘The Jungle Book’. Thus, one does wonder what could be the reason for Pahlaj Nihalani’s such strict and unnecessary actions over these films.

While the whole world is trying to find out this answer, we found an old magazine article from our archives which was related to Pahlaj Nihalani. We all know that Pahlaj Nihalani produced a film known as Andaz (1994) starring Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Karishma Kapoor. This movie had many double meaning songs like Lelo Lelo Mera, Khada Hai, Main Maal Gaadi Tu Dhakka Laga etc. One does wonder how the censor board passed this film, especially these songs whose words and actions were totally vulgar. But as per Pahlaj Nihalani and his interviews, this movie was passed by the censor board and that ends the discussion. What we found out was not related to Andaz but another film of his, the Govinda – Divya Bharti starrer film Shola Aur Shabnam (1992).

This movie was a huge hit and had formed the hit pair of Govinda and David Dhawan. Three weeks after its release, the censor board of that time recalled the film for re-viewing and re-censoring it, if required. Pahlaj Nihalani got a letter in his office and was asked to send his film to the censor board. Pahlaj did the needful, but also called up some media journalist and portrayed his weak image in front of them by saying ‘one can do nothing, but just watch mutely and wait for the high and mighty to do whatever they want to’. Few members of press tried getting the actual reason from the censor board but, failed to get any for their irrational decision. Now, the tables have turned, and Pahlaj is on the other side of it. May be Pahlaj is also taking such illogical decisions which reminds him of the ones he had to face during the time of Shola Aur Shabnam and expects the producers on the other side of the table, to do the same, by watching the whole drama mutely and wait for the high and mighty to do whatever they want to. We don’t know what’s the true reason for Pahlaj’s illogical decisions but, by looking at this piece of information one might feel that’s he is trying to give back what he got from the censor board in a chain reaction style.
