Whenever I Do a Negative Character, I Do it Like I am Playing a Hero - Akshaye Khanna
Ever since the first promo of Dishoom released, the actor playing the negative role piqued interest amongst the cine-goers. Akshaye Khanna is playing the baddie and it was a pleasant surprise to see the actor back on the big screen after a gap of almost 4 years.
When we met Akshaye, it was obvious to quiz him as to what took him so long to return to the big screen. "I had some personal issues which didn't allow me to take up work. After that was resolved, it took me unusually long time to find something that I wanted to do. Sometimes, it does take a little time, when you take a long break, to do what you want to do," revealed Akshaye.
While we missed Khanna in the films, he too missed doing work. Adds Akshaye, "I missed work. I think everybody wants to get up in the morning and go to work. And I love my work. It is not easy to stay away from it, and this is not just for the actors. That was a tough time for me, but now that has passed."
Given that he has done some great films in the past, one wonders what made him sign up Dishoom, an action-packed masala entertainer. Ask him about it and Akshaye explains, "It was essentially the one line of the film which attracted me to it. '48 hours before India-Pakistan match, a top star batsman gets kidnapped'. It is a unique one line for a Hindi movie. Also, the people who were on-board for the film were top class including the producers, the stars and the negative role. They are young and energetic. I like Rohit as a person. He is amazing. Whenever, I do a negative character, I do it like I am playing a hero. But they have to be written also that way. It has to be an entertaining hero, despite him being a badmaash. You cannot hate him. I can't do characters where you can hate me. I would want the audience to root for me. Dishoom had all of that. Also, I would want to do smaller roles initially in few films that I am doing after such a long gap. And this role offered me that. I wanted to start slowly and didn't need a full-fledged role.
He continues, "But I hardly had any work with John Abraham, Varun Dhawan and Jacqueline Fernandez. I just worked for two days. So there wasn't much interaction with them. I just shot for 25-30 days."
After playing a negative role in films like Race, Humraaz among others, we were excited to see how will Akshaye pull off this one. But it seems the gamble paid well and the people were loving him in the negative avatar. Admits Khanna, "The reaction I am got from the promo was very positive. I have done few films where I have done negative roles and they have enjoyed those roles. But the main reaction will come after the movie releases. For me, the first promo of the film did its job. People liked it and found it interesting and they will go to see the movie. And when people go to see the film, if they like it, then the movie will do good numbers. It is simple. But if they don't like it then it is a big problem."
Directed by Rohit Dhawan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, Dishoom stars John Abraham, Varun Dhawana and Jacqueline Fernandez in the lead. The movie hit the screens today.
