Sonam Kapoor is ecstatic as she is readying to receive her first National Award today at a ceremony in Delhi. The actress bagged the honour for her applause worthy performance in Neerja.

The movie was directed by Ram Madhvani and was a biopic on the life of Neerja Bhanot, who lost her life in the hijacked Pan Am flight. The film released last year and won hearts from both the audience and the critics alike.

While the National Awards were announced last month, the ceremony will be held today. Ahead of the special occasion, we caught up with Sonam Kapoor and spoke to her about her big win.

Ask her if the win has sunk in yet and Sonam admits, "No (laughs). Yesterday when I went up on stage for the rehearsals and I was sitting next to actors like Adil Hussain and all these amazing people, I was like 'Oh my God.. I am just a baby in front of all these people'. I was really excited. I was in shock. Everything was just hitting me yesterday when I was in Vigyan Bhavan sitting with all, with my name written over there. I am really humbled and honestly, I don't think I deserved it. I am really nervous. I have come to the gym right now and I am just walking around to beat the nervousness. Honestly, when you get such a big recognition, especially for me, I don't know if I deserve it, but I am happy for Ram and the Bhanots. I have got this recognition for playing this beautiful girl called Neerja Bhanot."

Quiz her what was Bhanots' reactions when they learnt that Kapoor bagged the award, she reveals, "They were so happy and excited. I was in Maheshwar and didn't have much network when the award was announced. So they sent me screen grabs of everything. They are very sweet people and they actually flew down for my Nani's chautha."

Along with Sonam, her Padman co-star Akshay Kumar too has bagged his first National Award for Rustom. Ask her if today also she would be celebrating with him, like they did on the sets of PadMan when the awards were announced, and Sonam says, "I am lucky to win the award and I don't know if there will be much of a celebration because tomorrow morning I have to reach very early for the shoot of Padman. I am going to take the first flight. So I would just go back and sleep. But I think the ceremony in itself if a big celebration."

In an interview to a tabloid, Sonam had revealed that her parents Anil Kapoor and Sunita Kapoor would be accompanying her for this occasion, making it an emotional and a proud moment for the entire family.

"Yes, it is indeed! (Laughs). I am very shy about these things. I didn't do many interviews also when I won. It is not my style. I find it very weird. I don't throw parties for this. But I am being held at gunpoint (laughs). I don't like blowing my own trumpet. Whatever has come in the media is a celebration for me. To get good work is the biggest reward, to be able to do my job and be an actor, something that I am most passionate about, to be able to be better at my craft, being a better actor. I am working towards that direction and I don't think it will ever stop. Humility is a very important thing and I have been very hard to be that way. I know a lot of people, who are naysayers, but I kind of ignore that and try to do my best. When you march to the beats of your own trumpet, it takes you a while, but you eventually reach the finish line," states the gorgeous lady!
