EXCLUSIVE: Rhea Kapoor clears the air on Veere di Wedding title controversy
Rhea Kapoor has cleared all the rumours concerned with Veere di Wedding title controversy.
Rhea Kapoor has cleared the air on the controversy surrounding the title of their Hindi film Veere di Wedding being similar to a Punjabi film called Veerey Ki Wedding which stars Jimmy Sheirgill in the lead.
Speaking exclusively to Pinkvilla, Rhea said, “Our film has been called Veere di Wedding from the very beginning. This is the title that my father's company (Anil Kapoor Film Company Private Limited) has registered with the IFTPC since 20th June 2015. Any suggestion that we are changing our film's title is simply not true.”
She added, “Veere di Wedding will commence shoot in August and we are all very excited about it.”
The controversy started a few months back when the news came in that a Punjabi film is also underway with a similar title to that of Rhea Kapoor’s Hindi film.
Sonam's father Anil Kapoor had intervened in this issue and written the Indian Motion Pictures Producers' Association (IMPPA). Reportedly, Anil Kapoor had moved the court and asked intervention. He wanted the court to stop the makers from using the similar title, claiming that they were seeking mileage from it.
The High Court dismissed Anil's claims and ruled in favour of Jimmy Sheirgill starrer. The director of Veerey Ki Wedding, Ashu Trikha told a tabloid, “We were informed that their lawyers had sent a notice asking us to be present in court, else they'd seek interim relief. We rushed to get our paperwork done.”
He added, "The judge said he was not convinced by the [Anil's] argument. He did not find any misuse or deceit as alleged, given that the story and cast were different. We are waiting for the judgment copy.” However, neither Anil nor Sonam or Rhea have commented on the judgement.
Directed by Shashanka Ghosh, Veere Di Wedding stars Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania in the lead roles. The movie is expected to begin sometime next month.
