There are discussions happening between the creative team and scriptwriting team about the changes to be made in the script

Ali Abbas Zafar has started shooting with Salman Khan and Disha Patani for the official adaptation of the super hit, South Korean film Ode To My Father (2014). Already there are reports of Disha’s role getting increased. Now we have heard that there may be script changes happening to suit Salman’s character in the film too thus deviating from the South Korean movie. The film is being produced by Salman’s brother-in-law and sister Atul and Alvira Agnihotri.

While Ode to My Father, directed by Yoon Je-kyoon, revolved around a young boy's promise made to his father during the Hungnam Evacuation (1950), Bharat is a young boy’s promise made to his father during the 1947 India-Pakistan partition.

Says a source, “OTMF was selected by Salman himself who gave Ali the movie and asked him to direct it if he liked it. While it’s true that one can’t make a film exactly how it is in the original as the historical incidents, which form a crucial backdrop to the story, in South Korea and India are different, certain key elements in Bharat are being tossed around in the movie which might impact its box-office success. The script writing credits have been given to Sa Soo-jin Park (original screenplay), Varun Sharma and Ali Abbas Zafar himself and the writing team has been scratching their heads. Apparently, certain people close to Salman have asked for script changes.”

The source adds that in Ode To My Father, the hero Deok-soo loses his leg in war-torn Vietnam war. Deok-soo's elderly uncle wants to sell the imported goods store and Deok-soo wants to earn enough money to purchase the store to fulfill his sister's wish for a big wedding. While his wife is scared for him, he wants to live for others. Deok-soo returns to Korea with a lame leg as he gets shot while trying to save the life of a small boy when reaching a boat on the river to escape from the Viet Cong (The National Liberation Front of South Vietnam). It's a very heroic deed by Deok-soo and forms the crux of some emotional scenes later in the movie.

The source adds, “But herein is the dilemma of the scriptwriters of Bharat. They have been told to change the script because ‘Bhai ka taang (leg) kaise kaate? Bhai ko langda kaisa dekhayenge? Bhai ka pair (leg) kaise katoge? His fans and audiences won’t like to see a physically challenged Salman.’ Etc.”

The source feels that too much creative inputs from various people may hamper the original story. “ODMF is a beautiful emotional drama. More than a film and character if you are giving Salman and his image more importance, how will the film run? Apparently, that’s what happened to Tubelight too – when there was too much of script interference. If you take a good story one can change the socio-economic-political context for Indian audiences but to change the character physically? It’s a bit much.”

Nikhil Namit, CEO, Reel Life Productions, says, “I cannot comment anything on the script.”

Now, all we need to do is wait and watch if we get to see Bhai's legs intact in Bharat or not!
