EXCLUSIVE: 15 Years of Kal Ho Naa Ho: Preity Zinta: Saif & I were Santa Banta; Shah Rukh Khan was unbelievable
In an EXCLUSIVE interview with PINKVILLA, Preity Zinta opened up about working with Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan for Kal Ho Naa Ho. The movie clocks 15 years today.
...and just like that, it has been 15 years of Kal Ho Naa Ho, a movie which made you shed happy tears whilst in pain (grudgingly so). Taking us through the turbulent yet beautiful journey of Aman (Shah Rukh Khan), Naina (Preity Zinta) and Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), this Karan Johar film made sure to make us believe irrevocably in love because 'chaav hai kabhi, kabhi hai dhoop zindagi.' There are several reasons why this movies continues to live, just like the heartbeat theme, among the millennial and Preity aka Naina resonates with us.
In a candid chat with us, Preity opened up on her favourite memories from the sets and like us, it did not end at one. "I think to have Yash [Johar] uncle on sets was so wonderful," she said whilst recollecting her days on sets and added, "The script was always amazing. I don't think there can ever be another Aman, or another Rohit." Speaking candidly about her camaraderie with Saif, with whom she shares a great rapport, Preity laughed, "Without it being a bad joke, Saif and me were somewhat Santa Banta. I am serious, because of all the co-stars I have worked with, he has always been one of my favourites. Our relationship besides the love factor, if anyone can equate to, it is very much similar to our equation in Kal Ho Na Ho. It is like, "Naina, na toh tum pretty ho, na tum sexy ho and you always have time for me." That's me and Saif in real life. We haven't worked in sometime but it was just perfect."
She then told us why she did not use a lot of glycerin in the movie and what prompted her to kill both her co-stars. Preity exclaimed, "Shah Rukh is unbelievable in the movie, look at the music, look at the film, this is Karan's one of the best written work and somewhere it struck a chord with me because my first love died in a car crash." Adding, she mentioned, "Working on a film with Yash Johar, they don't make producers like him anymore. He was all hearts, he was always like 'tu toh meri Simla ki heroine hai.' It always felt like home and Jaya [Bachchan] aunty, she is one of my favourite people in the industry. I absolutely love her. There was something special about this film."
"I don't like to watch myself, I don't know why but whenever Kal Ho Na Ho comes, it is one of those films which makes me cry. Shah Rukh makes me cry in that movie so much, it's a film where I don't think I used so much of glycerin because it just came naturally. I mean his performance was unbelievable. I used to want to kill both Shah Rukh and Saif because they had such funny lines and I had to be serious. It is very difficult," she smiled.
She concluded, "Kal Ho Naa Ho had the most timeless music. Even today if someone has to make me cry, they have to just play the Kal Ho Na Ho theme. So it was from a wonderful place that it came out. I am so glad that i was a part of it."
Well, Kal Ho Naa Ho will truly remain iconic!
