EXCLUSIVE: Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif starrer Sooryavanshi to be set in the 1990s

While Singham and Simmba franchises are based in real time, Akshay Kumar-starrer Sooryavanshi will be set in the 1990s, at a time where there were no security cameras and social media. He plays the ATU (Anti-Terrorism Unit) chief in the cop drama.

Last year, the big announcement for Rohit Shetty and Akshay Kumar's first collaboration was made, along with the release of Ranveer Singh-starrer Simmba. The superstar will be the latest one to join Shetty's cop universe, which is being planned on the lines of a Marvel series. With Ajay Devgn as Singham, Ranveer as Simmba and now, Akki as Veer Sooryavanshi, the Golmaal director will bring together all his three characters for a big merger.

A lot has been speculated about the cop drama, including some reports that claim it's a remake of Tamil film Theeran. But the filmmaker had quashed all such reports. What we have heard is completely different. A source close to the development tells us, "Rohit is planning to present Akshay in a never-seen-before avatar. This won't be in any way similar to the Singham or Simmba franchise. In fact, it won't be based in modern times. The film is set in the 1990s where Akshay's character will be solving an important case. He is the chief of the Anti Terrorism Unit (ATU). The movie will trace how Akshay becomes Sooryavanshi and it will be followed up with another sequel, too."

The source explains that this will be more challenging for Rohit. "The film will be tracked to a time where you don't have CCTV cameras and social media. So the treatment has to be very different and it will also trace how the police would investigate cases without these modern day equipment that aid in evidence proofs." Sooryavanshi will also mark the reunion for Akshay and Katrina Kaif, who plays the main female lead. The project is being mounted for an Eid 2020 release.
