EXCLUSIVE: Daler Mehndi gets candid about Ishq Nachave, his trademark style & thoughts on remixes of old songs

No matter how 'sophisticated' we get with our international choices, our music palette will always have a desi touch with classics like Tunak Tunak and Ho Jayegi Balle Balle. It would be stupid to not consider how influential Daler Mehndi has been to Indian music at large. Moreover, the veteran singer continues to remain relevant with the new generation through his earnest tunes which will either leave you dancing or determined and sometimes even both.

While we've gotten quite a few hit Bollywood tunes from Mr. Mehndi in the past few years, we're getting an independent dance tune, after a long time, with Ishq Nachave which came out today. In an EXCLUSIVE interview with Pinkvilla, when we asked Daler about his new song, he shared, "Ishq Nachave is a very lovely song. It's love that makes the world go round. There's nothing better than love. If you spread love, you'll receive more love. It's a great song. Many fans have been asking me over the years, 'Paaji, when will your personal song come out?'"

"Every year... in 2020 I gave a big hit with Le Chhalaang from Chhalaang and in 2019, I gave Uri: The Surgical Strike's Jagga Jiteya. Every year I give a hit but many of my fans requested for a song that they can dance on. Hence, Ishq Nachave is a song that you can dance to and you can also sit with your family, children, senior citizens and parents as you can share the song with any age group and without any shame. There isn't any dirty lyrics, you know, like what is being catered to in the market today. Or they talk about girls, whichever songs are coming out today. Parents are forced to watch such songs on television or on shows. There are songs with very embarrassing lyrics. You just can't listen to them but you also can't do anything about it. I'm happy about how clean and safe my song is which you can dance to and is a lot of fun. People will definitely enjoy it," the jovial 53-year-old singer added.

Mehndi also became extremely popular for his signature style, which included diamond-studded turbans and snazzy suits. On being a fashion icon, Daler recalled, "I was in America in 1986, at Berkeley University for business. When I thought about the fact that I need to work, I used to notice the windshield while driving my car that this is the way I move and dance and dress. I always thought about my look from the get-go. That's what I worked on. When I first became a singer, I decided I would work based on contact. I'm the first artist, back in 1995 when I debuted, who would take money in cheques. White money, I started taking. Even my turban style, where I attached a diamond, I did that... There's a saying, 'Sardar, woh sant bhi hai aur sipaahee bhi hai.' He's a saint as well as a soldier. I worked hard on the combination to develop my look. I was even successful in it and got a lot of love from fans. Thank God for that."

"Another thing! I have never used international brands which you currently see on Instagram, Twitter that people are wearing and talking about. I created my own brand and the Daler Mehndi dress has been worn once by Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Govinda and Salman Khan in their movies. Even Himesh Reshammiya did his entry that way. Everyone has followed my style, which I am pleased about. I had won Elle Magazine's Most Stylish Man award and it made me happy that my dress, my colours, I introduced them by myself along with my music. Composition, tunes, the verses and the rhythm design have all been done by me," Mehndi continued.

With the current trend of old Bollywood tunes being remixed, Daler felt that this was a needed trope for the current generation to get inspired by. "I believe that old songs should be remixed but the person who sings it needs to be harmonious. It shouldn't be that any amateur starts singing it. It should have a good singer with good music. Remixes are essentially important as it's because of it that the old songs continue to thrive with a new generation getting to listen to it. Old songs have always been good, they were never bad. With old songs, the new generation can think better. Otherwise, in the market today there were people who brought about many crass songs but they've all disappeared now. If there are old songs, we will get good lyrics, people will improve and our generation will understand what we are," Mehndi reasoned.

While Daler has been the voice for actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, amongst the present crop who would he like to provide vocals for? "I would love it if I could become Ranveer Singh's voice in a song and even Ranbir Kapoor," Mehndi concluded.
