EXCLUSIVE: Huma Qureshi - I didn't go to Hollywood, it came to me
Huma Qureshi talks about her movie Partition 1947.
Huma Qureshi's film Partition 1947 hit the screens today and it is being touted as her Hollywood debut movie. In an exclusive interview with us, Huma Qureshi got candid about her movie and the experience of working with director Gurinder Chaddha.
When asked about the movie, Huma said, "I have a lot of anticipation about this one. It is an unusual film. There is a lot of talk about Hollywood debut and all. I didn't think of it like that. I loved the story. I was just doing another film on a subject that appealed to me. It just happened to be a movie in English language. The standing ovation at Berlin was overwhelming. I want the movie to be appreciated. It is an Indian story traveling to different parts of the world. For me it is the most exciting and a proud thing."
The movie deals with a sensitive topic of partition. Ask her if was a risk to make a film on this background and Huma admits, "Art is risky. And nobody has made great art without taking risk. It is a sensitive subject. And we were aware of it. The film doesn't choose to be sensational. It talks about partition as a collective responsibility, showing all sides of what really happened. Talks about the conspiracy that sheds light on the new documents that were released a few years ago by the British revealing as to why the partition happened. In the sub-continent we keep fighting over so many issues, but we have a great rapport with Britain and we all love going there for vacation and shopping and all of that. It is something for the new generation to think about and reflect about it. The movie will shape our actions in the near future. There would be all sort of reactions, which we will accept very humbly."
Quiz Huma how did the prep for the movie go about and she explains, "Alia is a Muslim girl in love with Hindu boy in these turbulence times. I had to get the period look right. Gurinder thought I have this old world charm in my look. Whatever that means. I saw lot of old interviews and speeches of Vijaylaxmi Pandit."
Interestingly, ever since this movie has been announced, tinsel town is abuzz with the reports of Huma Qureshi making her Hollywood debut. Ask Huma about it and she gushes, "I didn't ask for it. I didn't go to Hollywood. I was very much in India at my house when I got the call for this film and I was told 'Gurinder Chaddha is making a movie. Do you want to tape for it so that Gurinder can watch it?' I agreed and this is how I got the movie. So actually Hollywood came to me."
