The things have finally started to move in the industry as we are all set to witness a theatrical release of first major Hindi feature film after a break of exactly 358 days. Interestingly, the last film to release before the cinema halls were shut due to the pandemic was Dinesh Vijan’s production, the Irrfan Khan starrer Angrezi Medium on March 12 and the first “major” Hindi film to hit the big screen is again a Dinesh Vijan production, Roohi Afzana. Pinkvilla has exclusively learnt that the spooky fest featuring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao is set to hit the big screen in the first week of March.

“It’s a horror comedy on the lines of Stree and the makers are extremely confident that the film will bring back the audience to the cinema halls. The Studio Partner, Jio, along with Dinesh have closed the terms and condition of theatrical deal with the exhibition sector and an announcement is underway very soon,” a trade source shared. The movie is directed by Hardik Mehta, who made his debut with the critically acclaimed Sanjay Mishra starrer, Kamyaab produced by Shah Rukh Khan. “Though films like Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, Madam Chief Minister among others have released in the cinema halls, Roohi Afzana will be the first Hindi film with an A-List cast to hit the big screen. If the content is as good as Stree, it should bring back the audience, and also put out a statement that the audience is waiting for entertainment at the moment. Many cinema halls are shut at the moment, but with the announcement of Roohi Afzana, they will open their shutters for the audience again,” the source added.

The horror comedy is said to be a part of Dinesh Vijan’s horror universe, taking forward the story of Stree. The producer is also bank rolling another horror film, Bhediya with Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in the lead. While Roohi Afzana is set to be the first of the lot to release after the government gave permission to operate at 100 percent occupancy, the trade still awaits the makers of Sooryavanshi to make an official announcement about their theatrical release. Even MiMi featuring Kriti Sanon is gearing up for a theatrical release soon, however, a date isn't decided yet, and the makers are expected to take a call on observing the performance of Roohi Afzana. Pinkvilla is in constant with the exhibitors about the status quo of the conversations, and will bring an update on release calender soon.
