EXCLUSIVE: Kangana Ranaut: If people say 80 percent B town actors have zero acting skills I won't take offence
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Kangana Ranaut steps it up by saying, "If someone says 80% of Bollywood industry is "Bhaand" or "useless", I will not get offended because it’s true, and I am not one of them."
Controversy follows Kangana Ranaut wherever she goes. After ruffling feathers with the media, in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, she steps it up by saying, "If someone says 80% of Bollywood industry is "Bhaand" or "useless", I will not get offended because it’s true, and I am not one of them."
Commenting on her recent confrontation with a journalist that escalated to a tussle with a section of media, she says, "The truth is the said journalist has been making fun of me. However, that should not concern the nation. For me, he is not a journalist; he is just bhatka hua nav yuvak (strayed young man). When you bitch about someone on social media its trolling. There is no constitutional right to troll."
When the Tanu Weds Manu actress was questioned about her branding the journalist anti-national, Kangana was quick to add, "Show me one clip where I have abused him and I will apologise. I didn't say anything wrong. I have a problem with people who disrespect the country or martyrs. For me, an anti-national is someone who is bothered only about one's own well-being. A person who thinks about community well-being is a nationalist. That said, when you make fun of martyrs like Bhagat Singh or Manikarnika, you are insulting them.”
The Judgementall Hai Kya actress has also been facing the ire of media for claiming that journalists attend events for ‘free food’. However, Kangana is relentless and unapologetic for the statements she made. Kangana mentioned, "Journalism is one of the most abused professions ever. I know so many people who have taken press card just to get parking. More than half of the ‘crowd’ that attends a press conference creates so much of ruckus for selfies with the celebs. They don't want a story; they come to the press conferences for pictures. There are few who are frustrated and come to spoil the atmosphere.”
Kangana also attempts to justify her stance by claiming that the statement was directed only to a section of the media and that is not her perception of the media at large. She draws parallel with the Bollywood industry: “Why should people feel bad? If anyone makes a video claiming in the [Bollywood] industry 80 out of 100 actors are bhaand or useless with zero percent acting skills and that with some influence, they are sitting and gaining free opportunities, it is true. Why should I pack my bag and go or be upset? I know am not one of those actors. It might be a bitter truth, but it is definitely a fact.”
Ranaut further adds, "There are great journalists as well. Through my ups and downs, there have been journalists on whose lap, or over phone, I have cried. I have had such great friendships and I still do. Why do you think my statement was directed at all journalists? I have only said that there are only four such journalists and they are influencing some weaker ones to join them. If I influence these weaker ones, they will again come back to me. [sic] This ban is actually a relief. They would have come and just trolled."
For those who do not agree with Kangana, the argument is based on the right to criticise her work. Similarly, film producers from Tamil Nadu had made news when they decided to ban journalists who write harsh reviews of films or criticise celebrities. When asked criticism, Kangana denies the fact that the industry is getting sensitive towards it. She said, “Critiques and criticism are more than welcome. I have become what I am only because of criticism. There was a point in my professional life, when I didn't know to converse in English. I had no sense of style. But trolling is not good. Even if you are a public figure, humiliating someone without a reason is not appreciated."

Has that been the reason why she has maintained a safe distance from social media? Kangana asserts it is not. She said, "That’s not the reason. Social media is a great platform and that’s the reason I am not worried about this ban. Actors are only surviving because of their Instagram and Twitter accounts. I am actually a social media star. My films like Queen or Tanu Weds Manu didn't even get me awards. They [award organisers] were trolled for that. Again social media came to the rescue. These organisations have always been banning me. Now, they are openly banning me otherwise they had been sly about it."
