EXCLUSIVE: Nikita Dutta talks about more recognition coming her way after Kabir Singh, film's criticism & more
Nikita Dutta says, "In terms of my choice of the film, when I told a few people about it, there were some people who questioned me as to why would you do a film as a second lead, and that was that but now that the movie has been a success, everyone is telling me how it is cool to be a part of the film."
Nikita Dutta, who moved on to Bollywood after a successful stint on television is definitely basking in the success of her second Bollywood outing, Kabir Singh. The actress played the role of Jia Sharma in the Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer. Directed by Sandeep Vanga, the movie is an official remake of Arjun Reddy, starring Vijay Devarkonda, Shalini Pandey and Jia Sharma. Nikita made her Bollywood debut with the Akshay Kumar and Mouni Roy starrer Gold.
Kabir Singh brought in more recognition for you than Gold did, despite the character being stronger in the latter. Ask her why do you think that this happened, she says, “I think there are a lot of factors involved and Gold was a multi-star cast film while the focus of the movie was hockey. So, I think every character getting noticed in a film like that is a little difficult unless you are there from the start till the end. And of course, Sunny and my story wasn’t the highlight, so even though I worked harder for Gold because I had to take diction classes and stuff, while with Kabir Singh, the fact that the movie has been such a huge success, every bit of it gets successful and gets appreciated. So, I think that has worked in my favour and given the darkness in the second half of the film and my bit comes as a ray of light, which is also a reason I think I got noticed.”
A lot of criticism has come the movie’s way, for various reasons. Ask her if there is any kind of criticism that she received, the actress says, “In terms of my choice of the film, when I told a few people about it, there were some people who questioned me as to why would you do a film as a second lead, and that was that but now that the movie has been a success, everyone is telling me how it is cool to be a part of the film. So there are two sides always when something works, it is hailed but when something doesn’t, it is all criticism. However, in terms of my character, no criticism at all.”
With the recognition coming her way, talking about whether or not anything has changed about how she is perceived as an actor, she says, “It is funny because honestly there isn’t much I got to do in Kabir Singh in terms of acting but many are appreciating what I have done. I personally feel I have done better things in the past but I think it is luck and god’s grace when you get appreciated it has to happen when it happens.”
Remakes have become a trend these days, and so have films with a multi-star cast. But at the end, the content is the winner. Talking about it, she says, “There is no assurity that something will be a success because it is a remake, or because it does/does not have a superstar. There have been biopics that have not done well, there are remakes that have not done well, even if it a fictional one, you can’t just get away with banking on one thing anymore, there is a lot that needs to be considered.”
Ask her about one ongoing trend she would like to be a part of, she said: “I think I would love to play a sportsperson myself, that is something I really want to do since it fascinates me.”
