EXCLUSIVE: Ranveer Singh: Deepika Padukone is proud of my achievements, that reaction from her is rare for me
Ranveer Singh in an EXCLUSIVE interview with PINKVILLA spoke about his 8 years of journey, wanting to be recognised as a versatile actor and constantly working on his craft, being social media's favourite and Deepika Padukone being "proud" of him. WATCH.
In the last 8 years, if nothing else, Ranveer Singh has proved to be an actor par excellence. The actor has been constantly reinventing himself and how! Be it Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat to Atmanand Tripathi in Lootera to Simmba in Simmba or Ram in Ram Leela, Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani, the actor has sunk his tooth into each character he played. His latest hit Simmba is a testimony to his ever-growing stardom and in a candid chat with PINKVILLA, the actor spoke at length about his 8 years of journey, wanting to be recognised as a versatile actor and constantly working on his craft, being social media's favourite and Deepika Padukone being "proud" of him.
We asked Ranveer if him being projected as an "accessible star" today is also responsible for his huge popularity and adulation that he has been receiving over the past 8 years? To that, he said, "It's been a magical 8 years journey, so much love [I have received]. We are living in a very different age now. It wasn't even like this 5 or 6 years ago. It wasn't like this when I started. We are in the age of social media, we are a young country and so many of our young people are so well informed that they want to put their arm around you and they want to say 'what's up?'. It's a new definition of being a star or a celebrity. It's a different time."
He continued, "My mentor always told me that he feels that my personality is my strength and that I ought to engage with people because I am a people's person, in his reading. He said the most significant 'PR' is when you actually meet a person, and how are you with them. You can only do so much with a projected image and I feel that we are in that age of authenticity. We see so much that we have developed the ability to recognise authentic from unauthentic. 2013 was a great year for me, I got so much critical acclaim for Lootera and Ram Leela. It happened in the same year and gave me validation ki 'haan ji aapko kaam ata hai.' That gave me a little bit of confidence to kind of make more authentic choices. I had an injury that year that taught me a lot, that all of this is very fragile. I had hurt my back seriously during Lootera and laid on my bed I used to think I just started and it is going to slip away. Coming out of that I started making more authentic choices only to see that it is much easier on me."
Moving over, we told him he has been declared the millennial actor, husband on social media already with hashtags involving couple goals and goals floating everywhere. Did he ever feel pressurised by that? Ranveer stated, "I would at least encourage people to do what I do, I just do what makes me happy. I pose however I want, I do whatever I want, wear whatever I want and that makes me happy. There is no pressure. If anything, there is responsibility and that is not something I feel not just as a public figure but as an entertainer. as well I am what I am because I am an entertainer. That is the core of what I do. I entertain people. So, that responsibility is there that now if people see my name associated with a film or poster, there is a certain amount of trust they have put in me over the last eight years. That kind of trust is too precious to me and valuable and I feel responsible to live up to it."
Ranveer will next be seen in Gully Boy wherein the dapper actor plays the role of a rapper. When asked Deepika Padukone's reaction to the trailer and announcement, Ranveer exclaimed, "She loved it. She absolutely loved it. She is very proud of me. That kind of reaction from her is rare for me and she is very proud of what I have achieved in my profession."
He added, "I have achieved to an extent what I am endeavouring to achieve in the sense that I want to be recognised as a versatile actor because I am trying to be the best actor I can possibly be, my definition of becoming a better actor is becoming a more versatile actor. I have consciously tried to showcase the versatility. Now, people are recognising that more than ever before. So that's very very heartening."
Gully Boy releases on February 14, 2019.
