Exclusive: Sai Tamhankar on her photoshoot: Never planned to be bold
In a recent interview, actress Sai Tamhankar opened up about her transformation and her choice of films
After shocking her fans with her bold avatar in the Bollywood film, Hunterrr, Sai Tamhankar has taken it a notch up with a new risqué photoshoot. The actress who is currently promoting her Marathi film, Girlfriend, speaks with Pinkvilla on her transformation and her choice of films.
Many Bollywood fans remember Sai for her role in the adult comedy Hunterrr, where she played a married woman who falls for the protagonist. The movie resulted in a lot of murmurs in the Marathi and Hindi film industry. However, she has proven time and again that she is much beyond just the looks. In the Marathi film industry, she continues to be one of the reigning queens who have dabbled with roles of varying intensity and depth; often pushing boundaries.
Such attempts are far and few. Often, a provocative role or photoshoot invites more trouble than accolades. However, for Sai, these are not new paths to traverse. Her two-piece bikini scene in her film, No Entry - Pudhe Dhoka Aahey, landed her in a big controversy. Then, in 2018 she carried the weight [literally, 10 kilograms] of a light-hearted comedy Vajandar on her shoulders, which earned her appreciation from critics.
That said, she was the first to face the camera in a bikini, which was initially both perturbing and unsettling for the audience. Then, only a section of actresses chose to go bold on-screen. But now, many actresses, who were never known to push the boundaries of sexuality, risk experimenting. Asked if the recent shoot is a deliberate attempt to join the club of bold and beautiful divas, she says, “I never planned to be bold or known to be bold. I just wanted to play different characters to the best of my ability. So if any character demanded me to be bold, I did. I’ll say I was fearless in that respect. I’m glad that we have come to a point where more people are playing such roles, and the roles are getting accepted by the audiences.”
Her controversies, although, have not just been because of roles but views too. However, Sai refuses to be not upfront with her views. “I will be honest there are times when I do regret. But that is who I am. I am a straightforward human being. I don’t intend to change that. I also have the strength to back what I believe. This is how you grow and learn,” she says.
She confesses that her bold shoot and her upfront views have piqued the interest of many to question if it’s an attempt to enter the Big Boss, which she vehemently denies. “I don’t see myself in the big boss house. It’s too difficult for me,” she adds.
It is this unapologetic trait that has earned her a huge fan base on social media. “I love to interact with my fans. Social media has truly changed the way you can do that. It has brought fans and celebrity closer. I strongly believe social media should be used responsibly. If used well, it certainly helps you to stay connected with your fans, which is absolutely great!”
Sai is known for her versatility, and it reflects in the choice of scripts and role of her forthcoming films too. “I have been shooting quite a lot recently and for varied projects at that. My film Girlfriend just released and I had a ball shooting for it. It’s an absolutely superb romcom, and I’m glad that after a long time I get to play my age. The character is both weird and lovable; I love that,” she says. The film received support from Salman Khan, who has always shown his penchant for Marathi film industry.
“Apart from this [Girlfriend], I recently shot for three more films which had me playing extremely interesting characters. I played a mother in one, a chef in another, and the third one is a multi-star film set in a rural sketch. Overall it has been a very interesting year so far!” she concludes.
