EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan's Dabangg 3 to get postponed with Dhoom 4, Sanjay Leela Bhansali & biopic in pipeline?
Salman Khan is reportedly rethinking on his strategy about signing the movies post the performance of Race 3 at the box office. The superstar is apparently considering three other projects which might lead to a further delay in Dabangg 3.
While Race 3 has made money for its producers because of satellite and digital rights, the movie has come and almost gone at the box office where it has underperformed. Trade pundits say the film may wind up with a lifetime business of Rs 175-200 crore which for a Salman Khan movie is not that great. Now the buzz is that because of Race 3’s under-performance, Salman has been doing a bit of rethinking of strategy while selecting his films. His star power remains as strong and unshakeable at the BO but the weak content and flawed scripts have often let him down – leading to lesser collections at the BO.
While he has already started shooting for Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat and will again resume shooting for it soon, trade circles are talking about the fact that after Bharat, his next Dabangg 3 (directed by Prabhudheva and produced by Salman’s brother Arbaaz Khan) may get postponed. The film is said to go on floors from September this year but some casting (including the main villain’s role) is yet to be finalized.
Says a trade source, “The moderate success of Remo D’Souza’s Race 3 is apparently making Salman re-think on his strategy of signing films. While the film has made decent money at the box-office, it could have done much better. A flawed script and weak content let it down. Post Race 3, while Salman still wants to do commercial entertainers, he wants the scripts to have strong story content with powerful characters. Bharat (produced by his brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri) will definitely happen as he and Ali have given blockbusters including their last Tiger Zinda Hai but it seems he is keen to do other films now, apart from Dabangg 3 and Sohail Khan’s Sher Khan.”
According to the source, Salman is looking at three scripts outside the family banners. “Apparently he locked YRF’s Dhoom 4 directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya last week and is contemplating two more projects. One is a biopic – based on the life of an army officer and his heroic deeds which is being made by a top A-class director, whose known to make strong content-oriented movies. It’s a great concept and discussion on the subject with Salman has been going on for some time. He was approached for the movie almost a couple of years ago and had put it on the backburner but is re-considering it now as it’s a very powerful subject. Then there’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie for which he is yet to hear the script so yes, Dabangg 3 may get delayed if he signs on these projects.”
