EXCLUSIVE: Santanu Hazarika says he’s close to Shruti Haasan; Denies commenting on their rumoured relationship

Over the last few years, Santanu Hazarika has established himself as a sought-after doodle artist. However, he has been in the news off late for his rumoured relationship with actress Shruti Haasan. The duo have been spotted a couple of times in the city and more often at the airport. In an exclusive conversation with Pinkvilla, Santanu opened up about his equation with the actress. When we asked if there is any truth to the dating rumours with Shruti, here’s what he said.

“I would just say that I really don’t discuss my relationships. I like to keep things personal, and prefer to talk about my art and work. Having said that, Shruti and I share a very passionate relationship when it comes to art, music and culture. It’s a beautiful friendship and bond that we share. In fact, we met because of our similar taste in music, fashion and culture and that’s the most beautiful part about this,” informs Santanu. However, when prodded further if they are dating, Santanu neither confirmed nor denied the news.

“I wouldn’t like to comment on that,” he kept it short. The artist adds that Shruti and he have known each other for a long time. “She got to know about me through my art and I obviously knew of her, so that’s how we connected. We actually first connected over music. So yes,we are quite close,” says Santanu adding that Shruti too has a keen interest in drawing and art. “Sometimes she also paints and draws with me, it’s nice,” he asserts.

Interestingly, Santanu was pursuing engineering but soon realised that he isn’t cut out for it. “But back then I also didn’t know what else to do. Our society doesn’t really give importance to artists or any other alternate careers. They just consider this to be a hobby. During my engineering days, I was failing miserably in my subjects and even went into depression. I was under medication and it was a very hard time. Drawing pulled me out of my bad phase,” says Santanu who soon went on to win a prestigious world doodle art championship. “After that everything fell in place,” Santanu smiles.

In the last few years, Santanu has illustrated the album art for many musicians including Raftaar, Divine and Ritviz. “I love working with musicians and I am grateful that I am able to collaborate with some of the biggest musicians of our country.” Is he now planning to explore his talent further with Bollywood. “You know, I have never worked with Bollywood before, nor do I watch many Bollywood films. However, if I find a good opportunity which suits my style then I would love to collaborate. In fact, a friend of mine even did some poster work for Anurag Kashyap recently. So yes, always open to doing unique and different things,” Santanu adds.

Lastly, since Shruti and he share a common interest in music, do we get to see them collaborate on a project in the future? “Yes, I think it is only organic that we’ll come up with something which is a combination of my aesthetics and her direction or style. We have a similar taste, so there are chances of something coming up in the future,” he signs off on a promising note.
