Manoj Bajpayee stars in Milap Zaveri's gritty action film Satyameva Jayate which releases this Friday. In an EXCLUSIVE tête-à-tête with Pinkvilla, Manoj got candid about the movie, its clash with Gold and how cinema is a tool for awareness and not to make a movement.
Manoj Bajpayee, who completes his 25th year in Bollywood next year, is gearing up for his next release Satyameva Jayate. The movie, which is directed by Milap Zaveri pits Manoj, a lawful cop against John Abraham, a maseeha who takes justice into his own hands. It's the ultimate fight for what's right and what's wrong. Satyameva Jayate releases on Independence Day 2018 i.e. August 15, 2018, which is the same day the Akshay Kumar starrer Gold will also be releasing.
In a candid EXCLUSIVE tête-à-tête with the no-filters attached Manoj, we spoke to the talented and versatile actor about his upcoming release Satyameva Jayate, his movie's clash with Gold at the box office on Independence Day, his ideal form of punishment for criminals especially for the crimes committed against women and if he feels Satyameva Jayeta has the power to make people do more than just tweet their mindset. Read excerpts from the interview with Manoj Bajpayee below:
On why he chose to be a part of Satyameva Jayate:
"It's a commercial film where the emotional elements are very strong. My character has loads of meat into it. His family life and his duty are balanced out so well."
Working on his chemistry of playing the perfect counterpart of John:
"We've known each other since Shootout at Wadala. We never had a thought of having to work on that relationship as we already had that chemistry and respect for each other. When you are working on a set with this kind of a cordial atmosphere, everyone is a nice guy and working towards the film, it becomes easy to work with each other."
Manoj's opinion on box office numbers:
"Nothing. You are talking to the wrong person." (laughs)
Clash between Satyameva Jayate and Gold:
"It doesn't matter to me. I don't think anyone is hitting into each other's area. Each and every film has its own audience waiting for them and they'll find that and each and every film will find its audience. It's not a clash between me and anyone else. It's a clash of two films, they are releasing on the same date but the audience will not be clashing with each other. Just a week before, the audience decides which film they will see first."
Manoj Bajpayee's ideal form of justice for crimes against women:
"It's so sad...since so many years, crimes against women are not dealt with any kind of severity. Crime against women is taken so lightly. It's a pathetic situation. It angers me and offends the moral part of me. My blood boils and I feel helpless because I can't do anything about it. On the other hand, so many political leaders...when you read their statements and their comments, it makes you feel so useless, that you are living in a society where the leaders have such a low idea about women and their safety. You don't feel good living in this society."
On whether Satyameva Jayate has the power to change a person's thinking or outlook:
"Cinema has the power to make you familiar with some issues. But, the moment you think cinema will change something, forget about it. Cinema is not a tool for change, it's a tool for awareness. You are putting too much of a responsibility on cinema. It has never done it. It can be a part of some movement but it can't be a movement."
Satyameva Jayate is slated to release on August 15, 2018.
