EXCLUSIVE - Section 377 Verdict: Aligarh director Hansal Mehta says, 'the judgment is a cause for celebration'
Aligarh director Hansal Mehta speaks on Section 377 and if the landmark judgement by the Supreme Court will encourage filmmakers to explore the subject better.
Today is a day to be marked in history as the Supreme Court of India repealed the colonial law that criminalised gay sex under Section 377. The landmark judgement has been lauded and lauded by everyone especially the LGBTQ community who have been fighting this battle for the longest time. It's the time to hoist the pride flag with confidence and respect all over the country. It is the time to get colourful. The judgement reminded everyone of the movie Aligarh, a Hansal Mehta directorial starring Manoj Bajpayee and Rajkummar Rao in the lead roles.
The movie revolved around a homosexual professor, Ramchandra Siras, played by Manoj Bajpayee. As the Supreme Court, today ruled in the favour of the LGBTQ community, we got in touch with Hansal Mehta to know if according to him this judgement will help liberate filmmakers and encourage them to explore subjects on homosexuality more often. To this, he said, "I cannot speak for other filmmakers but I have always felt liberated and told stories that I felt were pertinent to our times. The judgement is a cause for celebration - it is a victory for those films that have striven to tell stories about our times and the issues that plague societal attitudes."
Well, we do agree with him! Don't we? Hansal also took to Twitter to express his views on the judgement. He wrote, "The verdict is clear. Two consenting adults irrespective of sex, religion, cast and gender cannot be rendered criminals by the law. We as a society need to understand this before bringing bestiality, paedophiles etc as a counter to today’s landmark judgement."
He even congratulated writer Apurva Asrani for his contribution to Aligarh and wrote, "Personal differences aside I congratulate @Apurvasrani on being an important voice in this fight to gain justice for a community that has long been marginalised by law and society. His stand is vindicated. #Aligarh stands vindicated by the courts. The ball is in our court now."
