In a quick chat with Pinkvilla, Sumeet Vyas got candid about his character in Veere Di Wedding, his chemistry with Kareena and dancing, and much more. The movie released today.
Sumeet Vyas in Veere Di Wedding is unlike everything he has done before. He is dancing, he is romancing in a film which revolves around four female protagonists who takes life as it comes. If that wasn't enough, Sumeet is paired opposite none other than Kareena Kapoor Khan in VDW. This is an unexplored terrain for Sumeet, who is well known for his work in web series and Indie cinema.
In a quick chat with Pinkvilla, Sumeet got candid about his character, his chemistry with Kareena and dancing, and much more...
Here's an excerpt from the interview:
While a lot has been known about the leading actors, your character details haven't been revealed much. How close is this character to Sumeet?
This character is perhaps closest to me from all the characters that I have played so far. He is the kind of guy who wants to keep everyone happy. At times, it is very difficult to do that and you end up disappointing someone any which way. So I think it's the lesson he learns over the course of the film and a lesson I learned also from my life.
Was it an immediate YES or did you take some time before saying yes to the film?
No No, I said yes immediately. I was very keen on working with Shashank, Rhea and the entire cast. As an actor, I knew it is an important film to be a part of, proper big budget film. Also, it was different from the last couple of films I have done in terms of genre as well. I was previously doing Indie films and more serious setup. So, I wanted to be a part of the commercial setup.
But to play a hero in a film with four female leads. Did you ever feel apprehensive?
It is a general ensemble film. Everybody has got a very different part to play. It is very balanced. The story of the film revolves around mine and Kareena's character because it is our wedding and what happens during the course of that wedding. I knew it is an important part of the film and that was quite reassuring.
How was the experience like?
The experience was lovely, they are all so professional and come well prepared on sets. There is a lot of money riding on such films so everyone is very efficient with the work they do. It was a breeze actually, there were no hiccups.
Sharing screen space with Kareena, who is comparatively a more popular and senior actor. Did you feel nervous?
No, I don't think I was nervous or anything. I was okay yaar (laughs). It was saturating to work with someone who I have seen in films, TV and ad films and it was quite odd to see them in person. But then again it is the initial one or one and a half hour and then we were doing our own thing. And the credit goes to her as well, she is very very professional. She comes on sets, she is prepared and the kind of commitment she has is quite inspiring to see.
Your first interaction with Bebo?
The first time we met we shot straight away in Delhi as she was traveling, I think, so we did not get any time to do workshops. But I was glad as there was no awkwardness as such and the body of work she possesses, she brought that to the scenes and that was inspiring.
How would you rate your chemistry with her?
That is a really tough one. If I rate it less I am in trouble and If I rate it more I am in trouble. I think it looked very very organic. We were playing characters who have dated for a while so it was important that we share a comfort which was achieved and I was very happy about it.
You are playing a romantic hero onscreen but how much of a romantic person are you in real life?
In real life, I am a very confused person. I always say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Here at least, I had the time to prepare and say the right thing. A huge part of it also happens because of your co-actor so a lot of credit also goes to Kareena. That chemistry only happens when both are an equal contribution to the scene.
We totally loved seeing you dance in Bhangra Ta Sajda. Your experience performing the Bollywood jhatkas and matkas?
It was challenging. I rehearsed for a good 3 days before coming on sets as I was dancing with people who are like a pro in this. I was actually nervous about that bit in the entire movie because I hadn't done this before. I just wanted to get it right once.
.. do you feel you nailed it?
I saw the dance now. I don't go and see the monitor generally because it makes me nervous so when the director says Okay, I say Okay if he is pleased with it. When I saw it now, I was glad to see it did not look "that" odd.
Take us through your process as an actor. Are you a switch on and off kind of a person?
I mean as a process I completely detach myself from work. After every shot, I am detached. Because as an actor you have to arrive at that moment to give a take and you cannot carry a baggage. Say if I have to do an emotional scene after three minutes into the scene, I cannot get angry initially. I have to stay neutral to be able to arrive at that moment. So it is important to me to get detached from it when I am done with a scene and get fully involved when I am into it. It is tiring but that is something that has worked for me.
But do you sometimes find it difficult to come out of a scene?
In this movie, it did not happen but it happened during the other film I was doing. You draw inspiration from your life, at times even when you are not looking for a moment, it happens while you're in the scene. That's the magic of performing and acting and that really stays with you.
Your bucket list of directors you want to work with?
I want to work with Hansal Mehta, Imtiaz Ali, Shoojit Sircar, So I really hope I get to work with them.
A recent Bollywood film you loved watching?
I saw October recently and I loved it. Kudos to Varun [Dhawan] for experimenting at every stage of his career. He is following his heart and it is a tough one.
