EXCLUSIVE: Sushant Singh Rajput- From being an engineering student to working with wonderful directors, I already feel like a winner
Sushant Singh Rajput speaks to PINKVILLA about his upcoming films, journey so far, awards and its importance and much more.
Sushant Singh Rajput was recently felicitated with the Best Actor Award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, Australia. The actor received the award for his performance in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, which was a biopic made on former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Sushant has had a successful run in the showbiz if his last release Raabta is not taken into consideration.
With 5 movies up his sleeves, he is one of the busiest actors in B-Town. In an interview with PINKVILLA, the Raabta actor opened up about his journey so far, awards and its importance, his upcoming projects, love life and much more.
1. How does it feel getting the Best Actor Award at an international event?
Very very good. Every time you work hard and when you get acknowledged for that, it really feels good.
2. Does it affect you if you don't win an award?
Do I feel good when I get an award, of course, but do I feel bad when I don't? Of course not, because I am not looking for it. Few years back when I was probably out of college, and thought of doing theatre for the rest of my life and then stand as background dance quietly, I was so excited even then, not thinking that one day I will become an actor and do films and get an award and only then I will consider myself successful.
The last time I was in Melbourne with Shiamak Davar, I was dancing with all the Bollywood stars as a background dancer and I was so excited. I was not looking forward to anything. Now again coming to Melbourne, I am getting the Best Actor award, it feels great. At the same time, working itself gives me immense happiness. As long as I am doing what I am doing be it TV, theatre or films, I am happy to get the kind of opportunities I am getting. I am genuinely grateful and anything extra is just a bonus and I feel good about it.
I come from a very humble background. From a family where a guy is told that you have to be an engineer and then the guy works really hard and gets into one of the premier engineering colleges in the country and just when he is about to get the degree, he plans to drop out and wants to act. Now, I am getting a chance to work in Bollywood with wonderful directors so I already feel like a winner.
3. Your journey has been inspirational given that you are amongst the few actors whose transition from the small screen to the big screens has been successful. What do you think worked for you?
There are two things- first is that I'm not obsessed over what is going to happen. I take things as it comes instead of being fidgety. Now when I am doing what I like, acting in front of the camera, that is it, that is the work I wanted. I am not fidgety or worried about future. Right now, I am very happy where I am and looking forward to my next films.
Second is that I don't think anything is impossible. When I say this I really mean it.
4. You recently began prepping up for your upcoming film Chanda Mama Door Ke. You are also the first Indian actor to have visited NASA from inside. How was the experience?
The thing for me when I choose a movie is that I should not know how to do it, so this is it. Although I was good in maths and physics and knew about gravity, however, for the first time in my life I got to experience it. I went to NASA and the people there were really kind to me. They are very strict about things there but I got to accompany the chief there and also John Palmer, who has worked on many other Hollywood films, so it was a good feeling. I did and saw everything. It was important because I need to first know it myself that I was an astronaut and then experience it to get the emotions right. I have never seen the earth from the moon nor have I flown a space shuttle, there I would get to experience all that astronauts' experience.
5. When do you begin shooting for it?
In next two and half months, we begin shooting for Kedarnath and Chanda Mama Door Ke.
6. You recently got a telescope home. Tell us something about it?
It is not because of the film, of course, it would be helpful for the film too but I was very excited about it back in the day for the star gazing. It has been a long fascination for this. Wherever I go, I will take it.
7. Have you started doing any workshops or preparations for Abhishek Kapoor's Kedarnath?
I always do workshops before the start of a film. Like I said, the most exciting part for me is to not know the character I am playing and learn about it. So for this film too, I am doing what I should be. I am currently still figuring out and continuously searching for the right way to do my character.
8. Given that Saif Ali Khan's daughter Sara Ali Khan will be making her debut opposite you, do you feel any pressure?
I don't feel pressure about anything else but my character and that is how I think I have survived all these years. If you start giving something else more important, you don't look convincing. Right now, the only thing I am obsessed about is how to do my character convincingly.
9. What is your character like in Kedarnath?
I am told not to discuss but it is a beautiful love story.
10. Rumors of RAW being shelved were doing the rounds. Is it true?
It is not true. I have four films right now and the fifth one I am waiting for the makers to make an official statement. Out of these, 3 are weather specific. Hence, my management has not given out dates for all these films.
11. With such hectic schedule, how do you manage to give time to your love life and relationships?
I try to balance it. This is unpredictable which is life, btw. However, I don't know.. the best thing is that I don't know and I try to figure out.
