EXCLUSIVE: Swara Bhasker to play Shabana Azmi's role in Arth remake
While Jacqueline Fernandez will step into the shoes of Smita Patil in the remake, now Swara has been locked to essay Shabana Azmi's role from the original. South actress-filmmaker Revathy will direct the project.
Several Bollywood classics today from the 80s and 90s are being remade. While some like Judwaa and now Coolie No 1 have been announced, one that is being planned in the pipeline is a remake of Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil starrer cult classic Arth. South actress-filmmaker Revathi will be directing the remake of the original, that was helmed by Mahesh Bhatt.
Recently, it was announced that Jacqueline Fernandez has been roped in to play Smita Patil's role in the modern version. And now, we hear another top performer has been locked to essay Shabana Azmi's character from the classic. Who? Swara Bhasker. A source reveals, "Swara and Revathy have incredible respect for each other's body of work. Revathy has followed Swara's films and considers her one of the best actresses we have today. So when she was scouting for a performer with a stellar acting prowess to step into Shabana's shoes, she couldn't think of anyone but Swara." Swara will play the deserted housewife who embarks on a journey to find her own identity, after her husband decides to leave her. Jackie plays an actress who in turn becomes the third wheel in the husband-wife equation.

The source adds, "Verbally, they have agreed on doing the film. Now, they are working out the modalities before Swara signs on the dotted line. But she's definitely doing the film. Revathy plans to roll the film around this December-January."
