EXCLUSIVE: Tamasha director Imtiaz Ali: I feel that all the directors make the same film over and over again
In a conversation with Pinkvilla, we asked Imtiaz Ali about his movies and the common thread between them.
Imtiaz Ali takes us to a different land with his stories. His movies are all about self-realization and conflicts. Be it Tamasha, Love Aaj Kal or Jab We Met, his characters are relatable and often leaves a void in your heart.
Recently, in a conversation with Pinkvilla, we asked Imtiaz about why do his movies share the same subplot, his involvement with the music of the films and the travel junk that he is.
Imtiaz is often criticised for showing the same love story again and again. Ask Imtiaz about the same and he says, "Well, I agree with them [those who criticise him]. There is no point quarrelling opinion that a movie gets. I don't dispute them. I must say that I feel inclined to make a certain type of film each time. If there are common things, I do try to work in a way that it doesn't become common but if they feel it then I just feel I have to work harder and not repeat myself. But I also cannot help what is in my heart. I feel that all the directors make the same film over and over again. I try to change the common things but beyond a point, I can't help it."
Imtiaz's love for theatre is often replicated in his storytelling. When asked about the same, he adds, "It comes organically because that is where I started from and it will always remain with me."
Your characters are constantly travelling, be it Jab We Met, Love Aaj Kal, Tamasha or Jab Harry Met Sejal. What about it intrigues you? To this, the ace filmmaker explains, "I feel that a journey really changes people and I feel that the changes in a character is what a film should record. I think a journey is more dynamic and dramatic and new things happen to it and it is always welcomed in a film. It helps you explore things about yourself which you perhaps weren't aware of.
Another common thread in all Imtiaz's movie is music. Does Imtiaz take a keen interest in making of music for his films? To this, the Tamasha director said, "Well, I decide where to place a song more or less when I am writing. The thing about music is I am not a musician and don't listen to a lot of music nowadays. The process of making music is the most entertaining thing for me in the process of movie making. It is really cool to sit with musicians and talk to them. Like in Jab We Met, I thought there would be maximum 3 songs in the movie but ended up having so many."
