EXCLUSIVE: Thugs Of Hindostan debacle leaves the film with lesser screens only to benefit Badhaai Ho
In an EXCLUSIVE interaction with Girish Johar, the trade expert spoke about how nothing could save Thugs of Hindostan at the box office. He also shared how Badhaai Ho has benefited at the box office with more screens.
Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Badhaai Ho has been amongst the biggest success stories of 2018 with Rs 123 Crores already in its kitty. The unconventional family entertainer hit the Rs 100 crore mark within two weeks and deservedly so. With a big-ticket release like the Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan starrer Thugs of Hindostan, the number of screens for Badhaai Ho evidently reduced. However, with a big bumper opening of Rs 50 crores, the box office trajectory of TOH came tumbling down drastically. Not only did the critics condemn the film, even the audience felt cheated.
In an EXCLUSIVE interaction with Pinkvilla, trade expert Girish Johar spoke about how nothing could save Thugs of Hindostan at the box office. "Thugs of Hindostan has drastically fallen. The film has been outright rejected. It's one of the highest starters and one of the fastest fallers with the decline. I thought it would cross Race 3's business but to be honest, it will not even do that. Neither the Diwali holidays nor the higher ticket prices, nothing could help to save it. Though you have a big start as Diwali is the biggest box office date. Post Diwali, Aamir and Amitabh sir did bring the audience initially but it was written on the wall in the evening itself," Girsh shared.
He further spoke about how the number of screens increased for Badhaai Ho as the box office numbers came crashing down for TOH. Johar revealed, "After the release of Thugs of Hindostan, Badhaai Ho was curtailed down drastically but after the first weekend - Saturday evening onwards - Badhaai Ho was reinstated. Badhaai Ho was in 1-2 shows but the following Saturday-Sunday, it was back in 4-5 shows."
"That's the double-edged sword. If you have a higher ticket price and in this particular case, the content was downright rejected, you can't be watching a Rs 700 ticket of content, which is not carrying great results. It is much better to watch a Badhaai Ho or even an Andhadhun. Had the ticket prices been in a more comfort zone, Thugs of Hindostan would have benefitted the film a little bit longer. It only helped on Day 1 of the film," Girish stated.
