Michelle Trachtenberg passed away in February at the age of 39. Now, almost two months since her untimely death, the latest medical reports have finally revealed her cause of death.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, on Wednesday, the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress succumbed to complications resulting from diabetes mellitus. Trachtenberg's death has been declared natural.
Although there was no autopsy performed, results from toxicology tests shed more light on the factors leading to her death. In a report that was aired on ABC News, Trachtenberg was discovered lying lifeless by her mother at her New York City apartment on the morning of February 26.
"Upon arrival, officers observed a 39-year-old female unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded to the location and pronounced the victim deceased. Criminality is not suspected," the NYPD told People.
Because of objections from her religious family, the medical examiner only performed an external checkup and concluded that she did not have any suspicions about foul play.
Trachtenberg's passing shocked the entertainment community and her fans from multiple generations who had watched her performances since childhood. The Nickelodeon star started acting early in her life and first appeared in a feature film at age 10, titled Harriet the Spy.
Later, she became a household name playing Dawn Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar. Her stint on the cult classic television series for three seasons solidified her position as one of Hollywood's up-and-coming stars. Trachtenberg eventually played the character of Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl, alongside Blake Lively, which was telecast from 2007 through 2012.
Her representative released a short statement upon her death to confirm her passing and ask that her mourning family be left in peace. Michelle Trachtenberg died of natural causes on February 26, 2025.
