1. Paan Singh Tomar
Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Paan Singh Tomar starred Irrfan Khan in the titular role. Irrfan played the real-life character of Paan Singh Tomar, a soldier in the Indian Army who turned into an armed rebel against the system. The biographical film also starred Mahie Gill, Vipin Sharma, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in pivotal roles. Bijendra Kala played a brief role in the movie.
Paan Singh Tomar is regarded as one of the best Irrfan-starrers in Indian cinema. Apart from his marvelous acting, the late actor was praised for acing the local dialect and powerful screen presence.
2. Qarib Qarib Singlle
Qarib Qarib Singlle, a romantic-comedy film, featured Irrfan Khan and Malayalam actress Parvathy in her debut role. Tanuja Chandra directed and co-wrote the film. Irrfan's wife Sutapa Sikdar co-produced the movie along with ZEE Studios and JAR Pictures.
Irrfan played the role of Yogendra Kumar Devendra Nath Prajapati aka Yogi, a happy-go-lucky man and a poet. The film begins with Parvathy's character Jaya Shashidharan, a 35-year-old widow who creates her account on a dating site and fixes a date with Yogi. Irrfan as Yogi delivered this hilarious dialogue that reads, "Do latte laana, apni laatein mat leaana." Remember?
3. Haider
Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, Haider starred Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles. It was the modern adaptation of legendary English playwright William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. The 2014 movie also starred Tabu and Kay Kay Menon in crucial roles. Irrfan Khan was also a key part of the political crime thriller.
The film follows the story of Shahid's character Haider, a young student and a poet who returns to Kashmir amidst the insurgency-hit conflicts of 1995 in the state. Haider wanders to seek the answers to his father's sudden disappearance. Tabu played the role of his mother, Ghazala Meer, Kay Kay was cast as Haider's paternal uncle, Khurram Meer. Shraddha was his love interest, Arshia Lone, and Irrfan essayed the role of Roohdaar who was imprisoned with his missing father.
4. Life..In a Metro
Anurag Basu's directorial, Life in a...Metro is touted to be inspired by the 1960 American romantic comedy The Apartment. Basu's film featured an ensemble cast that included Shilpa Shetty, Kay Kay Menon, Konkona Sen Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Dharmendra, Nafisa Ali, Sharman Joshi, and others.
The 2007 drama film follows the story of nine people living in Mumbai whose lives are interconnected to each other. Irrfan was cast opposite Konkona in the movie. Their camaraderie was quite heartwarming and fun to watch. In a scene, Irrfan as Monty helps Konkona's character Shruti vent her anger by shouting at the top of their lungs on a terrace.
5. Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns
Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, the sequel to the 2010 film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, starred Jimmy Shergill, Mahie Gill, Irrfan Khan, and Soha Ali Khan in the lead roles. The 2013 movie was helmed by Tigmanshu Dhulia.
The sequel follows the story of Jimmy Sheirgill's character Aditya Pratap Singh, a crippled Sahab who wishes to recover from his physical disability and his wife's betrayal. Mahie Gill plays the role of his wife, Madhavi Devi, who becomes an MLA and turns into an alcoholic woman. Irrfan was cast as Indrajeet Pratap Singh, aka Raja Bhaiyya, in the film.
6. 7 Khoon Maaf
Based on famous author Ruskin Bond's short story Susanna's Seven Husbands, 7 Khoon Maaf starred Priyanka Chopra in the lead role. The 2011 black comedy also starred John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irrfan Khan, Alexander Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor, and Naseeruddin Shah as her on-screen husbands. Naseeruddin's son Vivaan Shah played a pivotal role.
PeeCee played the role of Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes who kills her six husbands while searching for love. The seventh victim was Susanna's metaphorical death. Irrfan was cast as her third husband, Mohammed Wasiullah Khan aka Musafir.
