Student of the Year 2 Review: Tiger, Ananya & Tara's film is packed with OTT theatrics & yawnworthy twist
SOTY 2 Review: Karan Johar is back with the sequel to the 2012 film and this time Punit Malhotra of I Hate Love Storys and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein fame helmed the same.

Karan Johar made his directorial debut with campus romance drama Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which went on to become a classic romantic drama of all time. After directing many films, he made SOTY (2012), which of course couldn't recreate the same magic of SRK and Kajol starrer, but still was well received by the audience. And now after 6 years, KJo is back with the sequel to the 2012 film and this time Punit Malhotra of I Hate Love Storys fame helmed the same.
So talking about SOTY 2, yes, it is again a movie from KJo's cannon and is packed with all larger than life, ostentatious, OTT theatrics and a yawn-worthy twist. The movie opens with Tiger's character Rohan dreaming of being the Student of the Year with his girlfriend Mridula aka Mia (Tara) by his side. But he wakes up and reveals how his GF is now in Dehradun's St. Teresa which is the same college that he aspires to be, but currently, he is studying in a mediocre level college named Pishorilal Chamandas College in Mussoorie which has a weird couple who are the principal of it.
And then, we are introduced to Shreya (Ananya) and her brother Manav (Aditya Seal). They are spoilt brats and their dad is a college trustee. Later, finally, Tiger gets admission into St. Teresa and cold war ensues between Rohan and the brother-sister duo of Shreya and Manav. Soon, a lot of drama, which includes cheating, fights and actors breaking into a jig at drop of hat unfolds till one of them emerges as the Student of the Year.
Speaking of the performances, lead star Tiger Shroff fares well, but he hardly looks like a college kid to me. On the other hand, Tara Sutaria who is marking their Bollywood debut with this movie has delivered an average performance. Talking about Ananya, another debutante was good in parts and will surely remind you of Alia Bhatt. YouTuber Harsh Beniwal plays the role of Tiger's sidekick; he manages to steal the show with his scenes which actually do induce snorts of laughter among the audience.
Talking about the setbacks, the movie will let you down by a predictable plot as some parts which could have been better were actually written shabbily. The abrupt ending and cliched treatment in many places spoils the movie. The film also falters when it comes to length as I felt it was quite lengthy with the last chunk of Kabaddi competition too was stretched unnecessarily.
All in all, this tale of friendship and love lacks soul, but if you are looking for snacky and breezy entertainment and sucker of rom-coms then go and grab the tickets for this film this weekend. But if you do not like sports and expecting serious on-screen love then you can give it a miss.
