Why Cheat India Mid Movie Review: Emraan Hashmi is wildly entertaining in this overdramatic flick
Why Cheat India Mid Movie Review: The storyline of Emraan Hashmi starrer is unique at best but has too much mirch masala for a topic of grave importance.
On first glance of Why Cheat India, my first deduction was how Emraan Hashmi's acting skills are criminally underrated. The man really knows how to capture your attention when he isn't busy making out with his leading ladies. Why Cheat India taps majorly into his charisma to drive this overdramatic film.
The film centres around the concept of examinations in India, especially of engineering and medical entrance exams, where suicide is also an option. Why Cheat India tries to put centre focus on the criminalisation of education. The titular character is Rakesh Sharma aka Rocky (Emraan Hashmi) whose earnings come from getting educated men to write papers for those who would have surely failed. Entrapped by the charm of money is small-town lad Satu, who falls into the vicious web and uses his intellect to "help" others only to help out his family. Then there is Satu's sister Nupur (Shreya Dhanwanthary) who is equally enamoured by Rocky, for other reasons.
From the get-go, the movie rides on the coattails of Hashmi and he's done a fine job to get us hooked in spite of the repeated telecast of one-liners like "No that you, no sorry." Shreya is the underdog of the first half who you feel major empathy for and you can get behind the chemistry of Emraan and Shreya. However, the cringe-worthy songs could have been easily avoided.
The storyline is unique at best but has too much mirch masala for a topic of grave importance. The good thing is the few minutes before the interval where the real fun begins.
Here's hoping I can give the second half an A+ grade instead of an F.
