What was the brief for her character like? There are a lot of close-ups in the film so for that did you constantly do the touch-ups?
The brief was actually pretty simple. We shot the first half in Rajasthan, so we wanted to keep the look real and give her entire look a very Rajasthani vibe. For that very vibe, we used a lot of kajal and liner. The climax was comparatively rawer. So I didn’t really have to do too many touch-ups as we wanted a more raw feel. In fact, Janhvi did not wear any makeup in the second half, all we used was a moisturiser, that's all. All in all, it was an extremely comfortable process with her.
How is Janhvi like? She comes from a blue-blooded film background, her cousin Sonam K Ahuja is considered 'Bollywood's fashion icon', so did she carry all that with her?
No, honestly, since the rehearsals of the movie, Janhvi completely surrendered herself and asked us to do what is best for the character and the movie. She just wanted to look like Parthavi, raw and real on the screen. Also, Shashank (Khaitan, the director of Dhadak) was keen on having a certain kind of look for her. He didn’t want Janhvi to look all glamorous and dolled up; he just really wanted to keep the Rajasthani vibe intact and true.
She is the daughter of the iconic Sridevi, and all of us know that how doting mother she was, she was present on the sets so what were her inputs?
Yes, when we started the shoot of the movie, Sri Ma’am was present on the sets. On the first day, she saw the look and she just went like, “Oh, she looks great” and then she went like, please make her look the same on the screen like she is looking now.
How is Janhvi like? Does she like things in a particular manner for her looks or she completely surrenders?
For the movie she completely surrendered, she wanted the best for the film which is a great quality. She loves shimmer, so for the promotional leg, we went with a bit of shine on her face but we didn’t go OTT, hence it looked aesthetically appealing. In fact, if you do notice, we have incorporated four major raging beauty trends in her makeup. We first went with the liner wings, then we also did a bit of a glittery-shiny makeup look, then finally, we did the classic smokey eyes which also happens to be my forte and we maintained to do a clean and fresh face of natural makeup.
How did you transform Janhvi to Parthavi?
Like I said, we wanted to keep the Rajasthani essence alive. We first saw the costumes and after seeing them, we decided to use a lot of kajal. If you see the movie, in the initial portions, she isn’t wearing a bindi, it’s very clean and fresh dewy skin, very very natural. We opted for fresh colours like a peach or a pink and nudes. Later on, in the film when she moves to Kolkata where she is supposed to look mature and older, we added kajal inside the eyes on the waterline and we added a bindi so that it gives an older appeal.
How much time did you take the whole look and was she always punctual?
She is quite punctual. Before coming to the shoot she used to make it a point to always work out. She is also someone who detests chemical products and always opts for natural ones.
A while back in an interview, Janhvi had mentioned how Sridevi had advised her to use very little mascara, so did she pass on that message to you while you did her face?
You know on the very first day of the shoot, she (Sridevi) just said, “Vardan lets use less mascara on her.” So after finishing the entire face, she just asked me if it looked good and I said a yes and then post that we stuck to using less mascara through the film.
