EXCLUSIVE: Shehla Khan talks about her latest collection and all things fashion
The designer showcased her latest collection titled Diana at the Lakme Fashion Week after a three-year haitus. Karan Johar, Bhumi Pednekar and Isabelle Kaif were her showstoppers.
It was an eventful week for the world of fashion. Designers showcased their latest works and multiple A-listers graced the ramp looking their best. Shehla Khan was one of the designers who showcased her latest collection 'Diana' at the Lakme Fashion Week after a three-year break. In the past, the graduate from the London College of Fashion has dressed some of Bollywood's top names including Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Malaika Arora and Alia Bhatt, to name a few.
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Shehla Khan spoke about what influenced her latest collection, her personal fashion choices, and more.
When Shehla's designs are observed carefully, it can be noticed that there are a lot of minute details in every outfit, that can easily be missed out on by the naked eye. Her obsession with detailing seems to come from observing the minute details of fashion through her father's own embroidery business. In 'Diana', her latest collection, there are a flurry of pearls and crystals. but what lies underneath, is hints of gold, and pastel hues that are perfect for the summer. "The style of the collection is inspired from the late 80s," says the designer who labelled this collection after none other than Princess Diana. "When I thought of the fashion icons of that time, Princess Diana instantly came to my mind She was my favourite and still is."
Princess Diana was and still is still considered a global fashion icon by many, including Shehla. She loved the princess' ideals of being able to dress the way she did, despite being a royal. "She never stuck to any norms and didn't really care that she had to dress a certian way. She set a benchmark for the following generations to come in the royal family."
Taking inspiration from some of her favourite pictures of princess Diana, the designer incorporated a few of those elements with her own aesthetics and gave them an Indian touch. The final masterpieces, are what not one, not two, but three showstoppers from the Bollywood industry walked the ramp in. It was Isabelle Kaif's debut on the ramp and she looked absolutely stunning alongside Bhumi Pednekar and Shehla's close friend Karan Johar. The three wore strikingly different outfits from Shehlaa - Isabelle in a sparkly metallic gold lehenga, Bhumi in a black ruffled lehenga with an ivory blouse with silver embellishments and a tulle dupatta with pearls on it. Karan Johar sported a smart jacket also with pearls, created by the designer. Though Shehla doesn't make outfit for men yet, Johar is doing his best to convince her to start! "Me walking for her will encourage her for sure," he said.
Considering how almost everybody from the industry has worn an outfit by Shehla, she doesn't have a favourite when it comes to who she likes to dress up. "I can't be biased they are all so beautiful and I love dressing all off them," she says quite diplomatically.
For somebody who eats, breathes and lives fashion, to Shehla, the concept is quite simple. "Whether it is exploring and studying different designers or people, fashion to me is just an expression of your style," the ace designer concludes simply.
