Producer Sandiip Sikcand's latest offering Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum stars Dipika Kakar and Karan V Grover in lead roles. The show aired just this week and is being touted as a breath of fresh air amid love sagas and supernatural dramas. Dipika plays a television actress by the name of Sonakshi in the show, while Karan V Grover plays a heart surgeon, Dr Rohit Sippy. The show highlights the complexities of the two world and brings audiences a little closer to the television world. However, did you know who has been the inspiration behind Sonakshi's character? Well, in an exclusive chat with PINKVILLA, Sandiip opened up on Divyanka being the inspiration behind Sonakshi's character on the show, how he feels blessed to have the opportunity to narrate a tale this unique and TRPs. Over to him:
On Divyanka Tripathi being the inspiration behind Sonakshi's character:
I think my inspiration for this show and Sonakshi’s character has been Divyanka Tripathi. As a matter of principle, I don’t usually get very friendly with my cast. In fact, when I started Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, I did not know Divyanka at all, and here, I was doing a show with her. In the process of doing the show and more importantly, when Vivek [Dahiya] got married to her, is when I got introduced to Divyanka in a more informal level. When I got to know her, I saw a lot of shades to her. For example, I saw she is as human as everybody is. In fact, I thought she had qualities which were very endearing. Somewhere down the line, as I got to know her, the character of Sonakshi started developing in my head where I thought that people usually have a very different notion about celebrities and especially TV actors. People often find TV actor as someone who is very aloof or has a lot of attitude. But when I met Divyanka, the perception was changed. In fact, I feel the television actors are more emotional and more loving than non-television people. For me, the inspiration for Sonakshi’s character has come from Divyanka. Come to think of it, we need to take a U-turn and thank Vivek because if he didn't introduce me to her, I would have never got to know Divyanka so well.
Divyanka's reaction to her being the inspiration behind KHKT?
The thing with Divyanka is somewhere down the line, she is biased with me. If I will tell her any script, which is not even good, she will say 'wah wah kitna acha hai'. But when she heard this script, she was very excited but because of her work commitment, she could not do the show. However, she knows that she is the inspiration behind it. I have seen her travelling in auto and stuff like that which also reflects in Sonakshi's character.
The storytelling technique- speaking to the camera adds a personal element to the show?
This happened because when we used to earlier make promos, the heroine used to look at the audience and speak and that used to shoot up the TRPs. So, I thought why don’t we connect the audience with the heroine right from the beginning. That is where the thought came from. When we all were discussing the idea over dinner once, even Divyanka was like this is a damn good idea. In this show, we are trying new ideas. When you do a flashback in TV soaps, we use flash, but this time I am not doing that. I am letting it come organically and seamlessly in the show.
The show has scenes where the protagonist is seen mocking the high drama shown in daily soap which is very different and unique... your comments?
Yes, that is a reflection of all of us saying 'what are we doing on TV?' The matter of fact is that I know that television runs home for a lot of people, but if you ask me are we doing fabulous creative work? I am not really sure. Is there scope to do better? Definitely. We have a scope to do a lot better. With my shows, be it Kahaan Hum Kahaan Tum or Dhhai Kilo Prem, I am trying to experiment and do something different. Right now the goal is to reach the maximum people. The drama has been done in a realistic manner.
On TRP being the major crusader:
I have never got so much positive feedback ever. So, I am obviously grateful. But you see, in our industry, feedback or what the industry says or Twitter, Instagram reaction is on one side and the rating that comes on Thursday is on the other. Although all the positive response fills up my heart with gratitude; honestly speaking, the actual test is on Thursday. I hope the audiences realise that there is something new and exciting and we get the love and numbers that we need. Once that happens, we will get a perfect start to an entertaining show which is also good and family viewing.
On Karan V Grover and Dipika Kakar acing the role:
Rohit’s character was build up organically and Karan has just taken it a notch higher. I have to also add that Dipika has added so much of colour and humanness to Sonakshi. She has brought in so much to the character on her own. Recently, for an upcoming track, I sat down with Dipika and was chatting with her and discussed if the scenes we were to shoot have ever happened with her. I do a lot of conversation with my actors before we proceed. As an actor and artists, she also contributes a lot. In Karan’s case too, his mother or relative is in the medical field. He brings in his knowledge of the industry with him from there. So, we have Divyanka as the inspiration for Dipika's character and Dipika is executing that inspiration very well. We have Karan’s parents who are the source for medical references and Karan is doing a fab job. It is a very combined family.
"I am working with two such lovely talents, one who is an inspiration and the other who is adding so much colour to that inspiration," Sandiip concluded.
