Sony TV's Pehredaar Piya Ki has turned out to be the talk of the town. Right from bashing the content to now signing a petition demanding a ban on its airing, PPK has been facing all kind of negative reviews right from its first promo.

The story of an 18-year-old girl marrying a 10-year-old boy, to be his saviour for life, has gone down too harsh for the viewers to digest.

Actress Tejasswi Prakash who plays the titular role of Diya, the pehredar of her young husband, too has been at the receiving end of severe backlash, where people have actually gathered up the gumption to question her sanity while signing up for the show.

In a quick yet candid tete a tete with us a while ago, the actress spoke about the show, her role and her off screen bond with the little boy.

Tell us about your role in Pehredaar Piya Ki ?

I am playing an 18-year-old girl who is very bubbly, very funny, very cute.  She acts active in the most unexpected situations.

How much do you relate to this character?

I am also very bubbly, very notorious, and I am very blunt on the face and honest... I can never lie. That's pretty similar.

So what kind of preparation went into getting the character right?

See I am playing a Marvadi which is very different from a Maharashtrian (Tejasswi is a Maharashtrian), so the language I had to understand a little and that was not that easy. The clothes were very different and I had to wear a pallah, and a lot of heavy jewellery. We did a lot of workshops and the director, the producers, the creatives have been very supportive and have been very good with making me understand things, so that helped.

The show made headlines just with its first promo for every wrong reason possible. How did you react to all the anti PPK reactions?

See the point of putting out a promo is expecting questions to be asked. If we put out a promo and get no reverts then it does not make sense. So I was actually glad that people are reacting. We can't even blame them for not understanding because we have not shown the story in the promo. We have just given a sneak peak. We have only not wanted them to understand and now that the people are not understanding we are blaming them that they are not understanding. I am the one actually saying that they are not going to understand and we made it a point to not let them understand so it's really fine. I love criticism honestly more than appreciation so I am really okay with it and that was bound to happen. But what I am upset about is that they are not asking why is she playing the Pehredaar? what is the need of a Pehredaar? that is what we are going to reveal in the show.

Are you trying to say that the negativity was a strategy or did it work accordingly that way?

No no, it just worked that way. Nobody intentionally wants negativity in their way. No negative publicity.

How was it working with your co-star who is apparently very different from other co-stars?

(laughs) First time I have got a co-star like that and probably the only time. I don't think this kind of show is ever going to be made in the future so it's very new, it's very fun to work with a guy so young, so there is no tension of being linked up and there is this very special bond that we both share. We fight a lot, we are the closest to each other. If there is anybody he is the closest to, it's me and same with me. It's very different from the problems we face with our normal grown up heroes from the tantrums of a kid who is a hero in the show.

Finally, enlighten us on the show?

Yes, we are married in the show (laughs), but then it's not like a marriage, our relationship is not of a husband and wife and not how romantic a marriage relationship is. It's just about a friendship, it's about a pure friendship and how she decides to protect this guy irrespective of however her life might end up in the future. It's just this woman-centric show, where she has taken this decision at a young age, at the age of 18 and she has been proud of it. She has been opposed to doing it but she still does it because it's the right thing to do.

Speaking of the women-centric show, there are a lot of shows on Television that promise to be women-centric but then they go haywire. What is the USP of this show that will stand out from the other shows?

Don't you think it's already standing out? (laughs) Like in comparison to all the other shows I don't think I need to give an extra pointer or anything.
I have never seen a show like this, and it really has grabbed a lot of attention. Nobody expected a show like this to come. Just a basic story of an 18-year-old getting married to a 10-year-old is taken everybody's attention with a snap. So apart from that if you are asking to point out any other USP it's going to be the story.

Did you say yes to the role because of the content?

Yes, the story did grab my attention also, to be honest. Also, I honestly took a second glance because I knew that people would react like this, they would want to know what the hell is happening which is why I knew that it is going to be an awesome show. Also, it's extremely challenging to do a role like this.

What was your biggest challenge that you had to overcome while playing Diya?

Honestly, to accept the kid as my husband (laughs).

Does your off screen bond display on-screen as well?

We are best friends in the show as well, so it worked.
