EXCLUSIVE- Surbhi Jyoti on Naagin 3: They have Superman, Spider-man, Iron Man; we have Naagins
Ever since the premiere of Naagin 3, it has been Surbhi Jyoti's character, Bella, which has left everyone intrigued. The actor in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla spoke at length about the show, her character and trolls.
Surbhi Jyoti rose to fame with her stint on the show Qubool Hai. In the show, Surbhi was seen playing a strong character in Qubool Hai. Surbhi later went on to feature in a web series Tanhaiyan opposite Barun Sobti. The actor has now returned to the Television with Naagin wherein she plays the role of Bella. Ever since the premiere of Naagin 3, it has been Surbhi's character which has left everyone intrigued.
In a quick chat, we spoke to Surbhi on Naagin 3, her character and the constant dissing of the show on social media.
Here's an excerpt from the interview:
1. Your first reaction when you were approached for Naagin 3?
My first reaction was whether I should do it because I knew there will be a lot of comparisons. Comparisons will be there in any field actually, but it is a challenge when you have to compete with something which is already very good. So, I picked that and Naagin is the biggest brand and has the highest TRP. Good Mouni Roy has set such high goals, mazza ayega usese upar jaane mein.
2. Tell us about your character Bella?
Bella is very simple She knows what is right and wrong. She is very observant. She has a purpose. She is very close to her father and therefore she does everything in her capacity to make sure he is debt-ridden. The story basically is what she does for her father and family and how her character changes and what all twists and turns she brings are something to witness.
3. With three leading ladies (Anita Hassanandini, Karishma Tanna) on the sets, how is the atmosphere like?
It is very positive. Everyone wants to give their 100%. The pressure is not just on the actors, it is also on the creatives as it is a challenge for them to bring something new to the table, something different from the previous two seasons. This season is very different and that's why I am really looking forward to it.
4. Did you feel pressurized with the constant comparison being made with Mouni and Adaa Khan?
No, I was very sure that it will be loved because people are in love with the Naagin, the concept of Naagin, they are in love with the character. So, people love supernatural stories and characters and of course, the actors playing the character. I am here to give my best and no one can take that away from me.
5. Your previous show Qubool Hai too had a few supernatural elements and now Naagin.. do we conclude that you have a sort of fascination to supernatural thrillers?
It is not a new concept. We have seen Naagins and their stories since childhood. It is an age-old concept but it is still rocking because people are intrigued by the idea of a serpent. They really fascinate people. So, it wasn't really difficult or weird to think that I will be a part of such a show. Of course, to understand my character was a little challenging. Ekta has beautifully described the characters to us, the writers and creative are particular of what they want and have conceived it all beautifully. When I was listening to them, I could see they have high hopes from me and I want to stand up for it.
6. This is your first collaboration with Balaji and Ekta Kapoor. Tell us about your first meet with her?
Everybody in this industry wanted to play Naagin. It is a big achievement in itself that I am doing Naagin and that is with Balaji. Now every new thing comes with a responsibility. Ekta is very professional, she is very clear about what she wants and explains in such a way that it gets into your head directly. She has some different aura around her.
7. But Naagin has constantly been dissed by a large section of society on social media. Your comments?
My point is, their superheroes are different. They have Spider-man, Superman, Ironman, we have Naagins, we have purnjaram concepts. Every culture has their own folklores and we grow up listening to them. Of course, western movies have high budgets and then they do an amazing job. I am also a fan of Avengers. But if there were no good shows in India, Naagin wouldn't be no 1. We haven't lost touch with our roots.
Humein jitna chahe Superman dikhado, humein fascinate Naagin hi Karta hai. So, we can't run away from this fact and this is not just in rural areas. I have seen people from urban areas who say that they religiously follow Naagin.
Naagin 3 airs on Colors during weekends.
